My new bike rack showed up late last week so on Friday I set it all up. I left my phone on the bumper while doing the assembly and forgot it there when I took the car and bikes for a test drive. I found my phone later on face down with tire prints on the back! Oops.

Yesterday we loaded up the family and went to Glenbow ranch for a ride. Super busy when we arrived at 2. We waited a few mins for a spot and glad we did as they ticketed everybody who decided to park on the road.

It was a great ride, wasn’t a huge issue to get out of the valley like I thought it was going to be. the rack worked out perfect for us and my wife got super sunburnt. Nice little Sunday.

I guess you could say… you need to retire it.

I’ll see myself out.

I ended up ordering a 1up rack which was delivered last week. Super high quality rack that's really easy to use. Took my huge 29er enduro bike for a rip this weekend and it worked like a dream. I'm extremely happy with it but need to think about improving the security.

I just use a thick cable with a small u-lock. It's a deterrent, but better than nothing. It can be a small pain because I take it off when driving and put back on when I park. No biggie really.

On another note, for my v90 cross country, I got a Stealth Hitch last year. Can't say enough about them and the customer service. Really expensive though. I didn't want to put down that kind of cash but in the end I'm pretty happy with the purchase.

Rode the Legacy Trail from Canmore to Minnewanka and then rode through Banff to tackle the Norquay climb yesterday. It was a breezy but beautiful day on the bike. Lots of wildlife out and about (bighorn, elk, deer...gophers).

Minnewanka was busy for a Monday. Everyone taking advantage of no cars. Lots of families, which was great to see.

Norquay was quiet with only a few vehicles passing us on the way up.

Threw together a few of the clips from my GoPro for the buddy I rode with who hasn't ridden in Alberta before. It was great seeing the Rockies again through fresh eyes. We tend to under-appreciate what we have on in our backyard.

The Canmore Minnewanka loop is a favourite of mine. It's not even to bad with traffic. Sometimes I'll do 2 loops of the Minnewanka section.

I've suffered up the Norquay road many times, though that was never the tricky part. We would continue up Stoney Squaw up the rooty side slope to the epic downhill that loops around the back side. One day I got convinced to do it twice. It's an awesome ride if you are up for it. Not for beginners!

A good long day is to start in Canmore, ride out to Johnston Canyon, then on the way back do the Minnewanka loop and finish back in Canmore. You earn your beer on that one.

so my disc brakes on my front wheel started a high pitch wail yesterday. I'm thinking a pad or caliper is slightly out of alignment. is this an easy fix?

^ my first thought is containment on the disc/pad. try spraying with isopropyl alcohol to see if you can clean it up. you may have to progress to using some emery cloth and pulling the pads out of the caliper

or i could be completely off base and it is something else

Make sure all the bolts are tight, since this is fairly new. If the caliper can jiggle, you may get noise. Some brakes just scream though.

Could just be some grit in there. If you have some alcohol wipes, you could try giving them a clean. You're not supposed to handle the disc or pads with your bare hands because the oils in your hands aren't great for them.

Upon further inspection. I have one pad in constant contact with the rotor. I will need to adjust it. There is no movement in the caliper.

Seems pretty finicky, if only there were an alternative

Beautiful day you picked, saw your goal for Norquay pop up on my feed, considered joining then realized it would be extremely painful for something I likely won't come close to.
Don't know what the wind was doing yesterday but you only need a minute and a favorable wind could make all the difference, you'll be in elite company when you do it!

Does one pad stay stationary, and the other move? If so it's a bit trickier to have them never make noise or rub. I had a few cheap sets like that and was always fighting them. Those are mechanical, not hydraulic, correct?

I set a goal for 15 minutes but that might have been a little ambitious. I've only ridden it once before 4 years ago so I forgot how long the segment was.

The wind was there at the start and then completely died mid-way. From that point on I was sweating like a pig, trying to unzip my jersey and still maintain 300W.

Still happy with 16:09 and knocking 6+ minutes off my previous time.

As an aside, it annoys me that Strava let everyone know I set a segment goal. Though it added some pressure to preform...

I know, I thought you did it for extra motivation. Does add pressure though. Haven't done that climb in at least 15 years, pre strava for sure

No one here is defending mechanical discs! (Except BB7s or Spyres)

I put Spyres on my commuter and they are soooo much better. I was constantly adjusting my old ones. Maybe once or twice a year with these. Great mechanicals.

I also had booked off yesterday afternoon to go for a ride and momentarily thought of heading over there after I saw your post. The 2 hrs of driving ultimately deterred from going though and I ended up just doing Springbank road and out to Bragg creek again, but the route is getting a little old. Very convenient location for me to start, but need to start venturing out again.

Convenience keeps me riding east of the city as well. < 2km to get the highway and I can easily get in 30-100km depending on the route. Flat as a pancake though.
