I think is a good trade for both teams, Loui Eriksson is not going back to Boston, Alex Khokhlachev is a known, Tuukka Rask is the only big moving piece for Boston here and the first round pick(Flames own) is the big moving piece for Calgary, if you think about it makes sense for both teams. Boston is unlikely to remain a top team, Loui Eriksson will be gone, Chara will retire soon and they don't have a top prospect to build around, they will get that with the Flames first rounder.

A trade scenario with Boston:
Calgary gets:
Tuukka Rask($2million reatined by Boston)
Rights to Loui Eriksson
Alex Khokhlachev
Boston 1st round pick
Boston gets:
Calgary first round pick
Dennis Wideman
Joni Ortio
Dallas pick(whatever that pick is).
|
The rights to Eriksson are pretty much worthless, but I'd take them because it'd be OK to get a jump on negotiating with him.
Khokhlachev and Ortio are pretty much a wash, both have had solid AHL seasons, but done nothing at the NHL level yet.
So now we are left with:
(lottery pending)
5th overall
27th-30th overall (depending on DAL vs. STL)
for
14th overall
Rask @ $5 million for 5 years
As long as the Flames pick doesn't end up being top 3, I have a hard time saying no to that deal, which means it's in the Flames favor IMO.

I really don't think we should be using our first rounder to upgrade goaltending.
We saw good goaltenders change teams this off-season.... none of which involved the value of a high first round pick.

One player doesn't complete the rebuild.
And dropping from 2nd/3rd to 6th/7th/8th doesn't add 'a few more years'

This is what I had in mind, the Flames pick will probably be in 6-9 range(the Flames don't trade if they are in the top 3)and Boston pick will be in the 11-14 range, I think don't there is a big drop from there and I don't think the Stars get past the Blues, so Dallas pick would be in the 2nd round.

The thing with this trade is we are not trading the first for just a goalie, there are things coming in this trade that will help the Flames in a lot ways and Khokhlachev plays like Nikita Kucherov and they both are taking the same route to the NHL.

One players does not complete the rebuild but getting a top three pick, would help that rebuild be three steps closer, without a top three, you are just taking one step forward.

I think finding a young, top flight forward is a higher priority than trading for a 29 year old goaltender.

So how many steps ahead are the oilers? You need to be able to manage your picks and use them properly.

The issue I have is, Boston gives up a top goaltender(probably one of the top 10 in the league) and al they get in return is a top 5/6 pick. Wideman is a 3rd pairing guy on a bad contract and Ortio is barely even an NHL backup at the moment.
After 2 years of not making the play offs, they will likely go all out to make it next season. Sweeney misses 2 years in a row and he'll be gone, Julien the same(3 years in a row for him) if he's even in charge come next April. They aren't making the play offs by trading Rask and picking up Wideman and Ortio. With their defence undergoing a transition, they will need Rask more than ever next season. I don't think they move him under any circumstances. I think if you ask Sweeney for Rask, he demands Bennett(or another top Flames roster player) in return.

The Oilers are ran by the "old boys club" and that is why, they cannot take any steps ahead, with the Flames, that is not the problem, seeing how they worked and managed with their young players, I have no doubt in my mind that with a top 3 pick this, Calgary will take steps ahead.

Adding a top 3 pick would move any team forward a few steps but trading away a kid like 19 year old Sam Bennett (I think we always have to say his age first) would be taking a step backwards. Bennett is the kind of player that teams want to draft in the top 3, he's one of the reasons the Flames future looks bright.

I still like Juolevi if we are not lucky enough to be top 3. A #1/#2 defenseman is waaay more valuable long-term than a winger... The guy seems to be in the Keith/McDonagh/Brodie mold and he is 6'3". Would much rather have the Flames draft him than anyone else outside the big 3...
