Anyone into bikepacking? I'm still doing research on my next touring bike and have been reading a lot about the off road aspect of touring.

My summer tires must be just really bad because if I so much as look at ice, I'll be on my side. They are totally useless so I'm stuck running the studs for fear of snow...

Never liked studs in winter, the rolling resistance was too much. I wiped out a few times on my regular tires, but it was worth the risk to me. Especially when they plow all the paths anyway.

Worth, are you talking gravel touring or dirt trails? I'm digging the gravel touring thing, if the weather holds up I'm heading out this weekend.

Ditto. Now that I'm not always stuck riding with the ex all the time, some buddies have been pitching epic, multiday rides. Not sure how much I'd enjoy not having a hot-tub n' beer, shower, latex foam bed after an epic though. They have proposed a couple of ideas to transition into bikepacking for a noob. (1) plant a couple class-Bs 60km apart or (2) pick a ride where there are rudimentary cabins along the way (revy apparently has one, Brevard, NC too). Please let me know if you come into more knowledge regarding singletrack bikepacking.

I thinking more long distance dirt. Not single track, more like what these guys are doing:

Singletrack bikepacking is pretty hardcore dude! I don't think I would commit to that, i'm looking for something in between that is still ok on the road, but ok on gravel and dirt also. I feel that if you go right into setting a bike up for singletrack, it's going to be a beast and going to be a huge pain on the road.

I'm just running an old Kona Jake the Snake for now.

If you're really getting into it big, maybe think of getting some Apidura bike packing bags (my old friend Tory helped develop these, she's ridden the Tour Divide, went from Alexandria Egypt to the coast of South Africa, Dempster Highway in the terrirtories, etc. )

Busted out my commuter today and rode 40k from my house in new Brighton to chestermere. Was nice to log some kilometres.

Dropped my commuter off at cyclepath. I am getting the tick trot brakes swapped out for an old pair of avid 3's I took of my mtn bike.

They also have my mtn bike as I am having them do some serious work to service both shocks, add a 42 tooth climbing gear, xt cassette and chain, and new long cage rear duerailler.

Hoping to start riding to work next week when I get my rigs back, and looking forward to being able to stay on my bike a little longer when riding bragging rights & merlin

How's the path out to Chestermere? I didn't do the ride last year because of the construction. I was thinking about doing it this afternoon.

My bike is getting pretty old, and is going to need a tune up. My rear wheel is not turning properly and may need a true fix up? Not really sure how much that will cost, and also not sure if i would need a new wheel altogether? Just curious if anyone would know a rough cost estimate for both or either, and figure may just get a new bike. Thanks gang.

Door-to-door repairs and tune-ups. The prices seem reasonable and not having to wait weeks for LBS might make it worth it as well.

Depends what is wrong with the wheel. Does it just need to be tried up or is there something wrong with the hub?

I would guess a basic tune up would run you $120 or so at a shop, I would assume that parts would be extra - so it could easily run you $200 to get this thing running.

You could buy a decent new mtn bike for $550 or so.

Yeah that was what I was thinking. Anything over like $100-150 I figured I would just get a new bike. My bike value was like $500 new, so not sure if its worth it to fix.

Anyone want some 650b tires to bash around pathways? Have some 80% maxxis crossmarks, 60% Pacentis (1 neo and 1 quasi, I think), and 90% smart sams. No clue about widths, snakeskin, compound... Otherwise going in the trash on Tuesday. This is what happens when you buy stuff just because it's on sale online.
