Well I'm happy they don't want to nuke it... I can't believe an idea like that is even recognized.
Quote:
Carol Browner, who serves as one of President Barack Obama's top advisers on the oil spill, said the administration wouldn't use explosives — or even a nuclear bomb — to end the spill.
|
Quote:
The idea has gained traction as successive conventional attempts at ending the spill have failed.
Browner said that the approach was way too risky, and could even make it worse.
"I think that's right, it's not a great idea to put a lot of radiation out in our oceans. I also think you could end up with an uncontrolled situation — rather than just having one point of leakage, which is this well, you could end up with a lot of places leaking," she explained. "This is obviously a very difficult situation, but we wouldn't want to make it more difficult."

The Russian's have nuked a bunch of oil spills in the past. I read about it a few weeks ago.

THey put a cap on the broken pipe today and while they say the next 48 hrs will tell the tale you can go to BP's website and watch a live stream and I am pretty sure by the huge gush of oil spurting out of that cap that this idea has failed.

They are putting a cap on it. A containment cap. This isn't like corking a bottle and bazinga, it's all over. It'll take some time.

To hell with their time, they have had plenty of time to stop this! They have ruined such a beautiful eco-system and it is sickening! They don't want to cap it without being able to still get oil out of it, they make me sick!

They can't just stick a cork in it due to the pressures. As a result, the capture method is the best choice right now until they can kill the well from below.

While this is probably true as a wildlife enthusiast who has been to Louisiana 4 times this breaks my heart.

Nobody is saying it isn't a horrible event. As a diver and ocean lover my heart aches too. I am quite certain if they felt there was a method to stop this they would have picked that first...and they did attempt that with the top kill. Taking the cynical view BP would want to cap this ASAP as that would retain as much oil as possible and wouldn't have caused the stock to nosedive.
Really interesting guy just on CNN. Seemed to know a lot about what's going on. Said he thought the cap was in place it just hadn't been closed yet. One of the interesting things he said is the flow you see is oil mixed with gas and 50-70% of the flow is the gas - mostly methane which dissipates on it's own.

The cap isn't on yet. They've just made a clean cut to the pipe and are in the process of putting the cap on.
Considering its underwater, no promises can be made that it will work, considering this method has never been attempted UNDERWATER.

I think you have no idea what it actually takes to stop this.
Someone posted it earlier saying this was something like trying to put a plug on a garden hose that was running at full stream.
I'd say its more like a firehouse at 2000psi.

Wasn't there a recovery aspect to the plug. Its not just a plug, but they are going to vent the oil onto a oil tanker. They have to test the integrity of the system from top to bottom to ensure that it can handle the pressure and that the plug doesn't rupture. that could take a couple of days at least.
Its a major feat for them to even get the cap onto that leak.

I read the other day that the leak has the same pressure as 4 fire hoses running full stream. When you consider one fire hose can propel a human down the street, it kind of puts into perspective the pressure the thing is spewing out at.
BP's stock is down another 3% already this morning, although so is the market.
