Went to quick game, wow what a difference. I'd suggest you guys feeling the game drag choose it, its way more fun.
I went with a strategy to make ally's with neutral states, ended up being pretty nice, got a number of great citizens out of it.
Said I'd stop to myself at 10pm, posting at 11:12pm.. one more turn, just one more turn

It's not like I don't like sims (I loved Railroad Tycoon and all those sims back in the day and I still play city building games) but Civilization has always escaped me. Maybe it's because I'm weird and don't like any alternate history type things (I hate Steampunk for one thing) and Civ is all about building an alternate history with cultures that should never exist together being neighboring states and the way it's all setup seems cartoony to me.

Lack of hotseat is garbage. I bought the game yesterday and had a couple friends come by to relive the hundreds of hours spent on Civ IV and everybody was dissapointed. I've heard it is to be added on later, but imo it was inexcusable to ship the game without a hotseat mode.

I honestly wish Civilization III had it. Civ IV was awesome for that though. That and Master of Orion II.

I actually like the slower expansion. I'm one to micromanage every aspect of the game, and in Civ4, it was downright tedious to do so. I ended up with so many cities, units, workers, etc that it took forever. Now, you end up with smaller numbers of cities and units for a nation that is of equal power.
All in all, I think I really like the game. But, I've only played a few hours. It remains to be seen if Civ5 is as complex as Civ4. I am not sure it is, which would be a bummer.
The fact that cities defend themselves is awesome.
I feel the Social Policies are better than having the forms of Civics and Governments intertwined with Research. Now, the culture you earn really does something. At the same time, it lessens the power of science and provides a better balance, IMO. And I say that as a player that mostly plays a science game.
The single units is nice too. It isnt much different, except that it is more manageable. Plus, you dont need 1000 units to win a war.
There are a few things I dislike so far. I hate the fact that the growth, research, and production "buckets" don't overfill to the next item. Im going to spend too much time maximizing so as to not "overbuild" something.
I also have how there is no animation for tiles being worked. In Civ4, you could look at the outside of a city and see which squares were being used because they had a hut, or the improvement was smoking, moving, or whatever. It is really too bad they did away with that.
Sadly, I have to put game down for the next few days. I have some deliverables I need to meet. Even now, I meant to only try it out for a few hours, and here it is, 6 hours later at 2:30AM ... LOL

Finally got a chance to play last night and I have mixed feelings about it. It's still as addictive as ever, but it does seem quite slow and simpler. Some things I like:
The civics
Combat is a lot deeper (although I'm more of a peaceful player)
Cities defend themselves
Somethings I didn't:
Gameplay seems a lot more shallow
Seems slow on Standard setting (you're not doing anything on a lot of turns)

Got to roughly turn 180 and then all of the sudden every AI declared war on me. Despite being ahead of each of my foes, combined they took 4/5 of my cities and I called it a night.
Damn you false sense of peace....
I liked my setup for expansion/development:
-Egyptians (+20% production on Wonders)
-Whatever policy gives you +33% production on Wonders
-Build Pyramids (+50% workers production)
Your land gets developed a lot quicker, which allows you to churn out even more wonders, which helps a lot. Problem was I focused on wonders and neglected to build up a large army.

Its really an acquired taste though, people who have never played it can rarely get into the game.
Hexagon tiles will make a big difference, many of my strategies are based on defensive walls of troops, this just make that harder to do.

I was exactly like you on that defence but now i have to re adjust that strategy also.

Standard speed is nearly like the longest setting in Civ 4. My next game will be at a faster setting for sure.
Aside from that, I'm finding it's really hard to play as a peaceful civilization, even at lower difficulties. The AI is completely bi-polar and goes from liking you to wanting to murder your children in less then a turn. This might have something to do with odd relations with city states though. I think Hanoi declared war on Seoul, and both me and the Iroquois got dragged into it automatically.
I'm really loving the gameplay changes though. Just need to figure out how to use my workers better. Leaving them on automatic seems to mess up a lot of my cities.
Oh, one tip I've discovered. Don't leave your troops on your border next to a civilization you don't want to go to war with. You see those troops as defensive, the other civ sees them as an invading force. Just keep them out of sight.

Be careful if you just float them offshore though, they're easy pickings on the water.

a) Thats not what schizophrenia is
b) Stupid Bismark proposed Open Borders and a research pact one turn, and then the next decided I needed to be wiped off the map)

Of course he did, my policy in Civ is to give open borders to nobody.
