http://thesouthpawbaseball.blogspot....h-to-jays.html

Southpaw's take on Chapman (before he signed) - long-winded even by his standards but basically he asserts a rebuilding team that can make an investment now but is waiting 3 years to contend - like the Jays - should pounce. Also brings up character issues that seem to be obvious for any 19 year old that fled his homeland to chase "best unsigned prospect in the world" money.

Well, they still have to sell some tickets.

Really, this would be a nothing move. Sign him to a 1 year deal, let him hit some more homeruns (needs 17 for 500) and retire a Jay. If they can dump Overbay to someone, he basically fills that gap for a year before Wallace can slide in to a possible 1B situation. Or, play him at DH and let him focus on hitting the cover off the ball. Delgado was hitting well last year before the injury. In a year where playoffs are an impossibility, I wouldn't mind this move at all.

So exactly how much do you guys all hate the Yankees?
I grew up a fan since I can remember – kind of born into it – so Im not some bandwagon jumper….Im 27 now, and I did grow up through the ‘lean times’ for the Yanks…..I genuinely feel bad for the Jays and the O’s – just because they have to contend with Boston and the NYY….its really not fair for them. Just wondering about the general feeling in Canada towards the Yanks…(Im assuming the BJ's are sort of ‘every Canadians team’ since its all you guys have)

(On a side note – I was at the highest scoring world series game of all time when I was a kid, Jays 15, Phils 14….– it was amazing – and it always kind of gave me a soft spot for the Jays.)

grew up through the lean times? they've essentially been on top of the division since 1994...you grew up through the boon times.

I hate the Yanks, but only as a rival team.

Really, I think if the Jays had an owner or a team philosophy to strive for greatness the way the Yanks do we'd be just as competitive.

I then hope for nothing but lean times for the Blue Jays then...

Would it be prudent then considering IDeath's comments, to have a revolving division system?

HOw about the teams with the worst fan bases get reprimanded by having to play in the AL East?

Then everyone can experience 'lean' times like the yankees.(I'm sure he was talking pre-Joe Torre Yankees.)

Fanbase quality can be judged by ticket sales and merchandising.

PS...

I just hate them cuz there is no salary cap in baseball. When the flames' org got serious about spending for a winner to compliment the fanbase, they ended up implementing a salary cap and now we can't bid on FA's like the yanks do. I'm just envious. I want the Jays to use all the profits from all of their media holdings throughout the country to invest some of their rake into Canada's only Baseball team. We did it twice why not more? We were the benchmark for gate admissions for an entire year. Canada loves baseball, just like Yankee fans and bandwagon fans love baseball. We should've been able to win one with our Mariano(Roy).

The optics of a assigning a list of "worst" fan bases is terrible.

I'd like something done to level the playing field though.

Hey from like 1981 to 1993 the Yankees didn't win the AL East IIRC, and since there were no playoffs in 94, it wasn't until 95 that they made the playoffs. The Brewers, Tigers, Red Sox, Orioles, and Jays all won at least once during those years. So there was a pretty long period outside the playoffs for a team like the Yankees who are always committed to trying to win.

It's not that much shorter than the Jays current drought.

Hmmm, they will never impose a soft or hard salary cap, so what?

Divisional realignment every 10 or 15 years? Didn't we used to have a great rivalry with the tigers during the 80's when we were in the central?

LOL, yeah, i'm sure that rough year the yanks had in 1982 would be tough for any 1 year-old. (i think that they won the pennant in '81)

The yankees were in first place in the division in '94 by 6.5 games, 70-43...they were pretty good unless you're comparing them to the mighty expos...so i count '94 too.

Balanced schedule and playoffs based on league seed.

(basically, keep the AL and NL separate but no divisions)

I was referring to the 80s and early 90s - when I played little league and was a baseball card collector as a kid...and 'lean times' is of course relative.

So from age 7 (when I started grasping the sport enough to care, going to the Stadium, etc...) to about 12 or 13, they really never won anything, and were really never that good. Torre, Jeter, Petitie and Mo changed all that

Marcum will sign a one year deal worth 850k.
