I think part of the debate in this thread is the tipping for good service vs. tipping for bad service.
If you get crappy service--it makes sense to leave a crappy tip. I just have an issue with people who don't want to tip GOOD servers based on principle. If a person gives you good service, does a good job, then yes, they deserve a tip, until the industry changes and the employers start paying them what the work is worth.
But if it's crappy service, that's a personal decision how someone deals with it. I was never the type to have a problem tipping--but I grew up with a father who ALWAYS tipped well, as long as the service was decent or better. Chances are that server needs those extra $2-5 more than I probably do.
