Well the one thing that Jack has shown repeatedly throughout the show is that he is a huge idiot and horrible decision maker, so that could be a factor.
More realistically my guess is that Jack is such a stubborn SOB who never wants to show weakness that he figured he could hide it from everyone until they were taken off the island in a day like he believed once Naomi and the helicopter showed up.

I think Jack hiding the appendicitis was because of what was mentioned during the episode...The island is supposed to heal people, not give them injuries.
I am seriously considering stopping watching this show until the series is over and then watching them all on DVD or something...I hate how spaced out everything is.

I figured he was hiding it because he still doesn't 100% trust Juliette and didn't want her to do the surgery. The same reason why he insisted to stay awake, watch the surgery, and have Kate in the room.

Definitely the best way to watch it. The only problem is it makes it very hard to put the blinders on when people/media talk about it all the time.
I'd really like to watch the Sopranos seasons, but as hard as I tried, there was no escaping hearing about how the series ended.

This episode was a little less 'bang for the buck' than last weeks which I can't recall having a wasted moment. All the stuff with Jack's surgery was wasted because we knew he gets off the island, so there's no tension and no point showing it aside from highlighting that he still loves Kate.
The major noteworthy element from this episode is that at this point Jack obviously knows that he and Claire are related. I was thinking that he must be made aware of this before he leaves but with all the ghost visitors off the island there's no reason his "Dad" couldn't have told him later.

I dont know i think it did have some tension.. when Bernard and his Wife were talking before Jack's Surgery(when getting the Table ready) They were discussing how folks come to the island and get better... Bernards wife asked if everyone comes here gets healthy(Like she did) then Why did Jack get Sick?. it was sutle but there are some questions raised I think..

I think Jack's illness could present his ticket off the island. If he needs proper medical attention, maybe he gets sent back to the mainland.

Another good episode. I'll rewatch it tomorrow to come up with more questions but a few instant observations:
- Move the island?
- Is Ben accepting the fact that he's been played by the island?
- Was Jack's dad's death a hoax?
- Was Ben a substitute for John?
- Does Widmore hide Desmond and Penny like Ben can hide the island?
- Who takes control of the boat now that the captain is dead?

The island "moving" explains why Jack can't find it in the future.
It appears Locke has been groomed for protector of the island possibly even before Ben's arrival. I don't think the island played Ben, but Ben is now being punished for acting selfishly: kidnapping the daughter, having Juliet's lover killed, shooting Locke. IMO, these actions have caused Ben to lose touch with the island.
Sayid should make a surprise rescue on the island, since he was boating to the island before the doctor started drifting there.
Is Claire now dead?
It seems Widmore wants to find the island to destroy it?

Well, yeah, I suppose that is a point but the entire process of the surgery seemed quite un-needed because we know he lives so there is no real danger. I guess the illness could have been to illustrate how bad an idea it was for Jack to leave the island but we've laready established throughout this season and the end of last that it wasn't going to work out for him.
Last night's episode was pretty good, again I feel like it didn't have that "something" that earlier episodes this season have ("The Constant") ... but it was very interesting. Ben's sure not too happy right now and I have to wonder if Jack is capable of making an intelligent decision at this point - my assumption with Lapidus leaving the satellite phone was so that the 815ers would be able to track the freighter folk rather than because they want to be followed ... maybe I'm not understanding, though.

The scene in that episode where Locke takes Hurley and Ben to the grave of the Dharma Initiative was simply brilliant.

I think the surgery will be used as a plot device to force Jack off the island in later episodes. The scene with him risking tearing his stitches last night was IMO foreshadowing. Some kind of physical confrontation will erupt soon, Jack will try to help but his stitches will rip and he will be forced to leave the island.
I do agree the show is missing something the first few episodes of the season had. I think this largely has to do with pacing. The pace has clearly slowed down and things are being set up for some kind of large finale.
I don't think anybody really knows what the deal with the tracker dropped from the copter. If the pilot dropped it, it was probably meant to get the people onto the chopper and save them before the island is incinerated. If the mercenaries dropped it, it may be to lead them into a trap.

Locke in the coffin was surprising. They make you think all episode that it will be Ben, only to have him walk in right in the last scent. Brilliant.
Why did Locke leave the island? and what effect does his death have? And it will be interesting to find out why he has a different name all of a sudden.

Ben is the best villian on TV. I don't mean currently, I honestly thing ever.
Raise of hands, who actually believes Ben when he says "whoever moves the island can never come back."
I sure don't. Just like he doesn't kill innocent people:
Locke: You just killed everyone on that boat
Ben: So.
I thought the Oceanic 6 would have been determined after long and careful thinking and deliberation on behalf of the survivors, I didn't think it would be as random as it was.
Oh also anyone else think that Ben wanted the boat destroyed so there'd be less evidence of the island? Keamy set up a "dead man's trap" yet it was win-win for Ben.

"So?"
That was fantastic. What a great couple of hours of TV. I have to admit to being really, really skeptical when I heard, "We've got to move the island" ... thought it was going to be terrible, but you know what, it wasn't. It was awesome. Very interested to see at this point how they mix the action between the island and off the island - will they do standalone shows, or mix it up within each episode?
And what's all the "bad stuff" that happened? Late January can't come quickly enough!
