Big night for the Hitmen last night... beat the Jaw 5-4, while Lethbridge lost in Brandon 4-0. The two teams swap opponents tonight. Calgary now five points ahead of the Hurricanes, with Lethbridge having eight to play.

Hitmen fall in a shootout to Brandon, but Lethbridge loses again. Six up with seven to play for the Canes. Magic number now 4.5.

That March 9th game is going to be huge. Might be moot by the end of the season but it is definitely a must-win game for the Canes for now.

^ that's gonna be a beauty game, I'm really glad Sportsnet is carrying it.
Giants grabbed a split in PG over the weekend, they're 2 points back of Tri-City for first (the Ams have a game in hand too). Of course, I'd still like to see them finish 2nd to (potentially) play the Bruins in the first round, that way I could make the roadie to the Valley again.
Big weekend, with Seattle and Everett coming to town. I'm kinda choked that I have to do a work promotion at the Everett game, but I'll still be able to catch bits and pieces..
Also, I'm hoping the Ice draw Medicine Hat rather than Moose Jaw in the first round out east.. Of all the times they have played the Tigers (and Lethbridge for that matter too), they've never met in the playoffs!

^^ for sure!
I dunno if I'll be heading out there, my car died over the weekend, but if you're at any of the (potential) games down here let me know!
Keeping my fingers crossed for a Giants/Ice final though.

Hurricanes lose tonight in Speedy Creek. Magic number to win the east is now 2.5. Looks like Sunday's game may be a potential decider in that regard.
In other news, Portland has now lost 22 straight.

That 22 straight losses, is it close to any records?

Not even close yet, but nearing the top (bottom?) three.
The 89-90 Victoria Cougars - the worst team in WHL history - lost 32 straight in 1989-90.
Second worst was the 1980-81 New Westminster Bruins who lost 25 straight, followed by the 1983-84 Winnipeg Warriors who lost 24 straight.
And, in case the WHL counts those two OTLs not as losses, thus making this a "winless streak", the record for that is 36 games without a win by the 1976-77 Regina Pats.

^^ The 1997-98 Edmonton Ice went 0-19-2 to start the season.. but the WHL record belongs to the 1989-90 Victoria Cougars, who lost 32 straight between 11/22/89 - 02/11/90 (courtesy whl.ca). Milan Dragicevic, who coached the Giants to a 13-win season in 2001-02, was a defenseman on that team.
As for this year, watched Seattle shut down the Giants tonight, they could really be a dark horse to come out of the West this year.. Huge on the back end (Hickey played well), some good scorers up front (Holloway had 2 goals tonight including the GWG), and they've gotten solid goaltending from Helenius (who played tonight) and DeSerres. Big crowd of almost 13k went home unhappy.
EDIT: Resolute with the photo finish!

For people complaining about the Flames no-show tonight they should have been in Lethbridge. The team seemed to give no effort for most of the game and even when they were dogging it they were still able to control the game.
Not a good time to go on a three game losing streak as both the Ice and Tigers hot right now and closing in fast in the standings.
I think first is most likely out of the picture now but what once looked like a sure 2nd or 3rd now will be a tough fight.

^^ I wouldn't worry so much about Kootenay.. They had Red Deer back to back, and close out with Swift tomorrow, the Canes on Wednesday, and a home-and-home with Calgary. They'll be hard-pressed to win half of those games.

Giants with a much better effort tonight, a 1-0 win over Everett. Kyle Beach took a teammate's shot to the face (karma?), and Irving looked good in the loss, made over 40 saves, many not really of the challenging variety though.
Got to skate around in the intermissions chuckin' Staples water bottles to the fans too, was pretty neat. Kinda glad I didn't fall down in front of 8,000 people too.

Last night went about as poorly as I feared... Lethbridge with an easy win in Red Deer, and Calgary getting stomped by Medicine Hat. Seems strange given we're still six up on Lethbridge, but today's game could well decide first in the conference. Either way, thank god for the new conference playoff format, and I really feel for the two Central teams that will be caught in the 4-5 match up.
Portland finally won a game, 4-3 over Seattle. Though they did so not without trying to blow it. After giving up just 16 shots over the first two periods, and skating to a 4-1 lead early in the third, Seattle rattled off 28 shots and two goals in the final frame.
One can only wonder what Kurtis Mucha might have done on a team with any kind of talent in front of him.

Well, that was an incredibly crappy finish. Seabrook and Postma with ridiculous giveaways to cost their team a shot at winning. Good job boys.
And now, the Hitmen no longer control their own destiny. They need help if they are going to win the division. But then, if one thing has generally defined the Hitmen under Kisio, it is choking in the big game. We'll see if they can put away Kootenay next weekend to go into the playoffs on a good note.

On another board there was a "predict the WHL finals" thread, I will stand by my pick of Lethbridge coming out of the East, but losing to Tri-City. Tough weekend for the Hitties though, but ya can't win 'em all I guess.

^^ Him, Barrie and Myers were all really good last time the Rockets were here. I really hope the Giants play Kamloops now 'cause my car died and I'll only be able to go to home games now.
