For me it would be based on the assumption that he continues to be a solid NHLer for the rest of the year. Maybe the number should be lower but it is more about just the idea of using their excess cap room now to buy years on the backend of the deal. If he looks like he is a 30-40 point player he would be a 3.5 million dollar guy imo.

I would be trying to sign the following types of contracts
Zary - 8 years 7.1 million a year (basically the Cozens contract)
Coronato - 8 years 6.5 million
Pelletier - 5 years 3.5 million
If the guys hit they will be value contracts when the Flames are ready to possibly sign UFAs and if they don’t they are likely still decent contracts in a 110 million dollar cap world.
I would then look and see if there was a UFA center that could be signed for 3 years or less. And a dman assuming they trade Rasmus.

Ooooooofff. Everyone complains about the Cozens contract and now want to hand it to Zary…. Zary hasn’t done anything close to what Cozens has and like it or not Cozens is a far superior player.
You are going to hand a 5 x $3.5MM deal to a player we passed through waivers and that has done nothing to show he has any staying power.

Or we could go sign some UFAs to reach the cap floor and then pay the young players we have bigger bucks when they prove what they can do and the Flames have less cap space. Either approach works.
The Bruins signed Marchand to an 8 year deal for basically the equivalent of about 8 million in today’s dollars after seasons of 61, 42 and 53 points. Each team approaches the cap differently.

Yeah, 3.5M for Pelletier is insane
I wouldn’t even offer 1.5M

Pelletier might not be in the league. Let alone a 5 year deal.

If you offer Pelletier 2 million a year and 5 years, is he really going to say no?

Probably - why would the Flames want that?
Pelletier needs to show he can stay healthy - he should be signing a Martin Pospisil special 2-year $1M AAV that makes it easy for him to stay on the NHL roster.

Probably not, I did not put a tonne of thought into the 3.5 number. All Ibcare about is signing the young guys to term, using your excess of cap space now to save cap space later when you have less of it. Short term show me contracts would be the worst type of contracts to sign imo.

It was a response to the 3.5 thrown out before.
For a Pelletier type...shorter term for one or two more years is fine. If he pops and looks like a guy who's demanding 5 and can get it in two years..I think I'm okay with that.

To me it depends on the player. I'm okay to do a 8 year deal for players 25 and under if they profile as sure top 4 type forwards. But for a guy like Pelletier...if he really pops after a 2 year show me...that's great. Better than needing to buyout 3 years.

There is still half a season for him to get something going, but as it stands right now, Pelletier is looking at a Pachal-type contract: 2 years at $1 - 1.1M.
It isn't a certainty that he stays on the roster, so you don't want to be paying him more than the amount that is fully slidable to the AHL - which is what, $1.25M or so these days?

Signing young guys is good.
Signing young guys to long term contracts who may not be viable NHL players is bad.
You sign young guys to show me contracts when they need to show you they belong.

Powerplay Quarterback

I had high hope that Pelletier become one of the valuable member for our future team. But now he looks like to become a support player at his top. I think he is too small/weak to play bottom 2 line and not skilled to play top 2 line. May be he can become a player like Coleman but he needs to start to play better than now.
For now I would like to see Klapka instead of him. Klapka may help Zary and Sharky more than Pelletier.

I can’t cheer for losses but recognize the upside.
I cheer for wins but recognize the downside.
Tankathon is an open tab in my browser; it’s better for the franchise to finish lower and retain the top 10 pick.
Lottery luck aside, this isn’t a bottom dweller top 3 pick team. Good.
A one time lower finish and the benefits of every round’s higher pick is the better franchise result.

I get the feeling Huska doesn’t like Klapka. Every time he comes up he gets minimal ice time and is quickly sent back down. I personally don’t think they use him properly. It seems Huska wants him to be a pseudo goon. But I get the feeling that’s not in his nature. He has half decent hands. I think he should be utilized as a power forward. Stick him in front of the net on the powerplay ect

I don't think Vladar is getting enough credit for his play this year. He's been a big part of it too.
