Georgia plays a road first round game with a loss and are in a pretty messy situation claiming two 3 loss SEC teams should be in.. Pretty big difference between that and getting a bye and 1 or 2 seed.

They were a lock either way. And until we see the bracket it's very possible Texas has an easier path even after losing, and they get the financial benefit of hosting a playoff game. It might genuinely be better to have lost for Texas depending on their draw.

Nice bed ####ting by SMU. Congrats to Alabama getting in.

A bye is always an easier path.

Not if the second round is Ohio State instead of Boise State.

Of course they prefer the bye, especially with a hurt QB. Now to be fair the 5 or 6 seed could have an easier path since they’re likely to play Boise/ASU/SMU or Clemson. But I imagine these two play again.
I don’t know about the financial benefit of the home game. I received a letter about playoff tickets and it mentioned prices were going to be set by the CFP committee, so I don’t know if home team keeps the gate. Not really consequential to Texas anyway.

SMU losing is probably the only way Alabama doesn’t get in.

Texas will be #6 or 7. So they'll have to beat Indiana to get to play Clemson or Georgia again.

If you want Alabama out, this ACC game is going exactly the way it would need to.

Tough call on SMU. Clemson isn't very good and a better team might have had SMU down 5TDs in the first half. But Alabama, South Carolina, Miami, Ole Miss....all meh, South Carolina maybe the best choice with them in good form down the stretch.

Those ships have all sailed. Alabama is ahead of all the teams that didn’t play so they are not revisiting those rankings.
It’s down to SMU or Alabama.
Alabama is the better team and is actually an outside threat to win it all. SMU can’t beat half the teams in the playoffs but remarkably they could get a couple of easy matchups and make it to the final 4. They could face Clemson and ASU.

Heartbreak for SMU. But I don’t see any scenario where they drop 3 spots due to losing an extra game that Bama wasn’t good enough to play in, in their own conference.
Bama is out. SMU and Clemson in.
If not, I’ll be there for the SMU boosters putting out a contract on every single committee member.
Alabama is clearly not the better team. They got spanked by a mediocre OK team and lost to friggin Vanderbilt. They deserve to be out.

The real mistake is the committee should have put SMU behind Indiana and Boise to begin with. Then even a close loss to #17 Clemson means dropping them one spot is easy. But losing by 3 on a last second play in an extra game to Clemson shouldn’t disqualify them.
If they were already 10th or 11th and the loss bumped them out, sure I could maybe stomach that. But there’s no justification at all, except ESPN bias and money, that would cause a team to drop by losing to a ranked team in a CCG when they’re ranked 8th and the teams behind them didn’t play.
