I actually think an offer sheet would be doing them a favor at this point. They are over the cap and likely looking for ways to shed any cap obligations.
My guess is they are trying to shop these guys and the market is pretty soft and they'd take a 2nd for either of them right now.

Yup, is Holloway really that much valuable than the prospect they just traded for?
I really think people are underestimating what Holloway could become if he had a fresh start away from that team.
What would be a reasonable offer? Clearly our first round pick isn’t available as it’s conditional and that would also be horribly dumb. Would Holloways camp accept a 2.29mil AAV which would send the grease a 3rd rd pick?

I’m in the opposite camp. The Oilers suck at drafting AND developing. People think he will pop once he is off the Oilers because of that. I think he just isn’t that good.

Well, I should make it clear that I’m not advocating offer sheets, I’m just speaking on the player. I would love it if we could get him in a trade/salary dump situation.
Of course, if what the IronMaiden said about him having an ego and a bad attitude is true, just forget him.
The problem with any offer sheet is you will need to qualify them at the same salary going forward. That sounds okay if the player continues to develop but it is taking a bit of a gamble.
There aren't that many RFAs who get offer sheets because if it is even a somewhat reasonable contract it will be matched and if it is unreasonable then it will handcuff the other team while still getting compensation. Jesperi Kotkaniemi is a prime example of a player who was expected to develop but really stagnated and is now a buyout candidate.
JK is equally a prime example of tit for tat pettiness after an offer sheet. We would possibly be facing numerous offer sheet candidates coming up our system at a time when deadmonton might have cap space and their own retool going on. And all they need to do is keep making offers and watching us blow up our cap space to match on bad deals, or risk giving them a prime asset for a 1st rounder that, lets face it, Edmonton couldn't turn into a valuable piece unless its top 3OA.
And lets face it, deadmonton is absolutely the kind of petty that would seek to get back at us as hard as they could. I mean Kassian "kept the code" once and picked up a ridiculous contract for doing so. If anyone would try and screw us just for the lolz, it's the no gooders.

Purely anecdotal but a buddy of mine has met him when he was with some people Holloway grew up with and it sounds like he pulled the "do you know who I am?" card when my friend introduced himself. Only the one incident but sounds like a loser

I still think an offer sheet would make sense. Sign him to a deal that brings him straight to UFA. If Edmonton signs it, then he goes UFA when it ends. I am willing to bet he signs it.
Why would you want to stay on a team that just threw 3m at J Skinner when you and Broberg were actually good during playoff time? They really dropped the ball on their youth.

We didn’t have the picks and the Oilers would have matched if we did. Plus our team is and was filled with wingers. Both players looked for opportunities that we didn’t have.
Philosophically, an offer sheet is only smart if you're trying to acquire a high end or core piece that you can build around, someone who is the type of player you wouldn't be able to acquire any other way.
Ask yourself this question: Is Dylan Holloway a high end or core piece that you want to keep long term? Is this the type of player that is hard to find?
If the answer to those questions is "no" then why would you do this knowing you would give up a valuable draft selection (as the Flames are sure to pick early in the 2nd round again), and risk retribution?
It's not a smart choice, and reeks of someone just trying to hurt their rival instead of just running their own race.
The original premise was wrong, it doesn't need to be a core piece to make sense.
But as it turns out, Holloway may become a core piece anyway.
Meh, I still stand by it, mostly because you don't want the retribution. It has to be worth it to risk that.
I think retribution is overblown.
There would need to a candidate on the team that originally did it, interest and ability from the victimized team to want to offersheet the candidate in question, and interest from the candidate to sign it. All during the ongoing reign of the victimized GM.
