I was never that confident that he was going to sign. He gave the Flames advanced notice that summer that he wasn't going to negotiate anything until the end of the next season. I'm not saying that means he was planning to leave, but it is pretty indicative of someone who knows there are factors that prevent him from committing.

Gaudreau was probably still upset at Treliving's "embarrassing joke" of an offer he sent his way, as phrased by Johnny's dad.

Heck, he may even make Kadri look like Tkachuk!

They can't brink back Gaudreau and keep Huberdeau/Kadri

Do you think Guy Gaudreau told his son whom he trained as a kid to throw away being an all time franchise leader and a legend in a hockey market, a chance to set records there and possibly become the most beloved player in franchise history to move to a non hockey market 8 hours down the highway? No? Me neither. He had stated over and over he wanted to stay in Calgary and then he negotiated an extension until the last hour. If his heart was set on going back East why did he negotiate at all? Wouldn't he have told his agent right from the start hr wanted to go to free agency? Why would his agent feel the need to apologize and why would Brad seem shocked? What you are theorizing is that Gaudreau wanted to leave a hockey legacy for no good reason at the expense of disappointing his new wife and his family. If it was a friend's thing he could have signed with Devil's, they made an offer and he would have been much closer. His wife on the other hand has family and friends in Columbus and it has the best children's hospital which is her career in the US. Like you don't even need the confirmation from the insiders if you connect the dots.

I just thought I'd reassure everyone here that I have absolutely NO sources, especially as I live in the middle of everywhere, BC.

I think Gaudreau and Kadri would've been dynamite together, as Connor Zary is probably the closest comparable we've seen to Johnny since he left. Thinking something similar to the Mackinnon-Gaudreau duo back in the 2016 World Cup. What a dynamic pairing, they played off eachother really well with Mackinnon driving play up the middle and dishing off to Gaudreau who would then cut east-west and cause all kinds of havoc. It's too bad he declined the first time around though, it could've changed the entire complexion of the team at the time.

Well I think it was Gaudreau who probably thought the offer was embarrassing and relayed that back to his folks. I mean, he was the one that said if it was anything close to his ask, he'd still be a Flame today. So, I'm thinking it was a pretty bad offer which is probably pretty on point based on Treliving's history of haggling his RFAs.

I don't think the offer came even close to the Columbus number all things considered at that time.

Are we talking about Gaudreau's RFA deal or the last offer? Because the last offer was exactly what Gaudreau was asking for.

Apologies if I wasn't clear, the podcast was referring to the 2021 RFA offer.

Then I'm really confused because there was a 2016 RFA deal which he accepted (at the last second) and a 2022 offer as a pending UFA, in which his agent said "here's what Johnny needs to accept" and the Flames said "OK". And then the agent said "sorry, he's decided not to sign".

The offer in the offseason before his career year

It was the one offered to him after the 2021 Canadian division series. Think there was some contract talk in the offseason that year, then the two sides mutually agreed to cease talks at some point. Don't remember the exact timeline, but there was definitely an offer tendered to Gaudreau back in 2021, we know that for sure.

Not saying the Flames would have both if they can bring back Johnny. He's a complimentary (not free ) player to a lot of players. Probably makes more sense for a guy like Huberdeau. Flames can probably make it work with both Kadri and Huberdeau if they want keep both by shipping out guys like Hanifin, Markstrom, and Tanev. This is a dream scenario, but I believe Jonny's never gonna come back - maybe for an old timer reunion.

I'd take Johnny back in a heartbeat. He's what this team is lacking right now, a possession guy that can set up the play. Huberdeau's passing might be elite, but he doesn't hold onto the puck like Johnny does.

Gotcha. Yes, that was before the big year, and after a really disappointing one. It was an offer to kick in last season. In that case, it'd be less than the Columbus offer since it was an offer to a guy who scored 58 in 70 games and 49 in 56 games the previous 2 years.
