I'm so old I remember Jagr as a rookie. He actually didn't use his size the same as he did later on. He was a dangler. It took him a while to develop his superb board game.

This board is starting to really make me wonder.
Cosentino had Honzek at 9 and Mackenzie at 17
Good pick, I’ll take those guy’s opinions, I watch a lot of hockey both WHL and NHL and I have no clue who we should pick, be a fan and trust our management until they give you a reason not to.

This pick is growing on me the more I watch/see/read about it.
Honzek is going to have a monster year in the WHL next season.

Where are we seeing his elite shooting?
Most of his assists were secondary and his goals reminded me a lot of Monahan, garbage goal guy (not a bad thing)

I am 4 minutes into this video and there are multiple highlights of him burning through defenders and showing sick hands and shot. What videos are you watching?

Lots of positives, some negatives
He went around where his ranking was. Only disappointment is because there were a few higher ranked guys dropped
Just hope Conroy know what he is doing.

Not an endorsement, he’s as clueless as they come. His rankings are based on his perspective of elite game breaking ability.

|
McKenzie's rankings are also an average of a 10 NHL scouts. 1 scout ranking a prospect really high or really low can pull a prospect up or down a couple of spots on his list.

Saw playmaking and scoring were given an 8/10 on the earlier chart which seems encouraging, but I wonder how tough the grading is and how much that 9 or 10 counts for in the conversation about NHL projection.
|
The players with obvious elite qualities were taken in the top 10. Almost every player after is a work in progress.

Not sure where the surprise and disappointment are coming from. We grabbed a guy about where he was projected in a lot of rankings.
Judging by how many smaller guys dropped, lots of teams are valuing size. Only guy who went after that I’d have preferred to Honzek is Barlow. Small guys like Moore and Perrault dropped for a reason - they don’t project as well as the bigger prospects. Brings to mind the comment by an NHL scout in an Athletic article last week that every year most of the amateur rankings that come out pre-draft have smaller guys rated higher than how they end up being drafted.

Conroy was "assistant to the GM" way back then, 2 years out of retirement. I doubt he had a lot of input.

I'm no Pronman fan either, but wouldn't that be an excellent complement to his size?

Ultimately the comparison for Honzek for me will be vs Heidt and Cristall. Two guys, in the same league, that handily outproduced Honzek (although Honzek's production was still super super solid). When you're taking guys that are getting outperformed you just have to hope your scouting team knows what they're doing.

May have to go watch some Giants games next year.
Seems like a decent pick to me. Not overly exciting but a guy who ticks a lot of hockey boxes.

I found it interesting that they were taking about working on things with Moore to help him process the game faster
Trying to get an edge, or a concern?
