Lysell+ from Boston is not near enough either.
There's no certainty Buffalo offered the 13th, but if they did and the Flames didn't jump at it then we really mucked that up.

Not only is there no certainty, there’s no indication at all that 13 was on offer.
Based on the lack of 1st round picks traded and the quality of return for other guys moved around the last couple of days, I think people need to significantly reduce their expectations if they think the top piece for Hanifin is going to be equivalent to the 13th pick. I’m sure the only way we could’ve gotten that, if it were an option, would be to send 16 as well.

Mittlestadt had 59 points last year playing on the third line and on the 2nd PP unit. He’s 24 and has 139 points in 227 NHL games (0.61 PPG). No, he’s probably not going to be an elite centre. But if the Flames move on from Lindholm or Backlund, they’ll need someone to step in an play #2/3 C going forward, and Mittlestadt looks a heck of a lot better there than Dube (24 years old with 120 points in 282 games for 0.43 PPG).
The player who the Flames need to steer clear of is Olofsson. The Sabres are trying to move him, but he’s as one-dimensional as they come.

Draft Pick
|
I may be in the minority here, but I’m ok if we only get draft picks for Hanifin. The problem with this team is that they keep replacing vacancies each season with ‘plugs’ or cast offs from other teams. I say it’s time they let Poirier, Zary, Pelletier, Coronado, and Phillips (if they can resign him) have a crack at the line up. No offence to Looch, Ritchie, or Lewis, but they’re all ‘past apex’. Give the kids an opportunity to work their way into the line up. Maybe some of them will be first or second liners by the end of the year. Use the draft picks to fill out the Wranglers line up, and take the extra cap room created from Toffoli, Hanafin, and maybe Vladar to give Lindholm a raise. Duclair as a throw in would be just fine…
We are also getting Kylington back this year. With Poirier and ‘Shilly’ back this year, you could argue that we may be even better on defence.

Posted it yesterday before the draft, so the scenario where the key piece back of #13OA is gone.
But I still like either a package with the main piece being either Krebs or Quinn.
Or the package I think would be the most interesting of both Krebs & Quinn, and we take on Skinner without Buffalo retaining any salary.
Depends how interested Buffalo actually is, but I like them as a trade partner better than Florida again.

He seems to fit what Conroy and Iggy want, which is “size, speed, skill”. Mittlestadt looked great against the Flames last year, dynamic and highly skilled.
He was clearly rushed to the NHL, barely spent any time in the minors and his development suffered for it.
I wouldn’t be upset if Mittlestadt was the centrepiece of a Hanifin return. He could be great with Huberdeau.

I would be money on them wanting a roster player back like in the Toffoli deal. ComixZone linked the barn burner video from yesterday where Seravalli reported (and actually said it's not just speculation but info) that they are trying to be competitive next year.

I am entirely okay with trading Hanifin for 2024 draft picks. It gives the scouts an entire year to really nail that draft.

You might be right about Poirier, but the point is that we haven’t been letting our young talent develop in the big leagues. I think it’s time to give it a shot….

Taking a while to get to 5000

Disappointed that the teams with multiple picks didn't move any, 24 picks are fine but obviously disappointing considering we just passed the first round. An additional high 2nd would be nice but clock is ticking there.
Hanifin probably gets moved today though. Seemed like plenty of talk yesterday. 23 2nd, 24 1st, young roster ready cost controlled player?

Doesn't feel like a Flames move to do pure picks. Everything we have seen from them points to retooling with younger players ready to pop. Knowing the Flames I could even see them asking for Duclair and Bennett and having a ready made proven line.

His offensive abilities cannot be denied, and they will translate to the show, but he has a long way to go to secure that spot permanently.
I get MA Bergeron vibes from him.

Powerplay Quarterback
|
I would be fine with middlestat as a centerpiece.
He's still young, had abit of a breakout season and has high draft pedigree. He was a legit top 10 pick projected as a top 6 center
Unfortunately, he M-o appears to be avoid rebuild, get younger but stay competitive. This would work with that
