We have seen the good Tkachuk in Calgary
His last regular season (104 pt) and his first year in Florida are not much difference
What he learn was in the playoffs you have to play hockey also, not just the rough stuff. Also, who know what we would have seen if Markstrom didn’t #### the bed so badly

I wish there was a way to see the alternate ending where Markstrom didn't suck vs the Oilers and we won that series.
We'd probably still have lost to the Avs, but kept our core and been a legit contender again this season.
The entire organization would be different; Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Treliving & Sutter would likely all still be Flames and maybe we'd be starting the Stanley Cup finals tomorrow.
Thanks Marky.

If they had made him the villain, perfect.
They made him out as a big POS who didn't respect the game, siding with Kassian and referencing back to Doughty.
Their panel can go #### themselves

My current client has a site in Florida and in a meeting a few weeks ago while waiting for others to join, I asked some of those on the call if anyone was following the Panthers and their run in the NHL... crickets...
Also, please Mods, can you help us change the thread title?

There should be no hate for Tkachuk here. He was honest about his intentions and let the Flames get some assets for him. Flames are the ones that signed him to a bridge.
Happy for him.

Celebrated Square Root Day

I love how every day there's a new tweet or story about Tkachuk that further cements what we lost in Calgary, lol. "First hockey player in people magazine! What's it like being the new face of the NHL?!".

It's doing a hell of a job of pointing out how poorly we market our players, even inside of this City.
So yeah - you get a lot of criticism while you play here, but guess what? You get almost none of the public benefits that you do while playing in Florida. You'll get all the public scrutiny, and none of the brand growth! What a deal!

I think it is more about how the Canadian media in general markets players. When he was in Calgary, third party media pushed him as a villain who was trying to spoil the McDavid party. Even if Tkachuk was still in Calgary doing what his is doing, the narrative would be much different. The Canadian media is so fixated on McDavid and Toronto, that there isn't much room left to promote other players.
The Flames have always had the short end of the stick going all the way back to the Gretzky era. The Flames built a perennial contender and exciting team, but even the year they won the Cup, most of the media outside of Calgary were talking about it like it was a travesty that the Oilers didn't win it that year.
The same mentality was on display when the media pushed the idea that a star player like Tkachuk should have to fight Edmonton's goon after making a clean hit, to show respect to the Oilers. In no other market would that be a reasonable expectation.
There was a short period of time where Iginla was the player in the national spotlight, but even then, I don't think the national media promoted him as hard as they should have. Just imagine if he played in an American market where there is less promotional bias, he would have been a global celebrity.
Honestly though, the Flames always being treated as a villain is one of the things that drew me to being a Flames fan in the first place. For the most part, I grew up in the Winnipeg media market when the old Jets were there, but gravitated to the Flames mainly out of my hate for the Oilers and their golden boy image that dominated the media. I started as an Oilers anti-fan before becoming fully entangled with the Flames.

I've said this before, but had we gotten just bang-average goaltending this team would have made the playoffs.
Markstrom essentially sunk this season.
We barely missed the playoffs as it is and we had the worst starting goaltender in the league.

Wow, haven't paid much attention to hockey since the Flames’ season ended, but what an unreal run for Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett and the rest of the Florida Panthers. I think it's safe to say Matthew made the right choice for himself personally by requesting a trade.
It's only his first year with his new franchise and he's already breaking franchise records, playing for the Stanley Cup, galvanizing his new fanbase, getting national exposure with Shaq, Charles Barkley and overall just having the time of his life.
Obviously not seeing Sam and Matthew do it for us is a bit of a kick to the chops. But honestly, I can't even be mad at Chucky. Everyone here knows the affinity I had for Johnny and Matty, so I'm probably biased. But honestly, he was an outstanding Flame, he provided years of joy/entertainment and service to the community.
I don't blame him for wanting out, he saw the writing on the wall once Johnny left and he knew this team would be mediocre. Also IMO, it's up to the GM and organization to build a contender that players want to stay and play for and that didn't happen. It may be bittersweet, but I don’t bear any ill will towards Matty. Good luck to both him and Sam.

Technically, he never requested a trade. He just said that he wasn't going to re-sign with the Flames. Although he knew it would trigger a trade, there was no indication that he would not have played his last year out with the Flames.

Tkachuk isn't the first hockey player in people magazine, heck Wayne was on the cover in the 80s

Yeah!
Tkachuk is just part of a long line up.

I wouldn't complain much it's good for the game.
Tkachuk went to build the Tkachuk brand and he's doing a great job of it.
I'd rather more Tkachuk than seeing McDavid and Matthews get the attention.

Didn’t even know he was going to be in People’s magazine. Good on Chucky, players of his ilk are dying breed in today’s NHL. Hopefully he continues to have success in Florida to really teach the Flames’ organization a big lesson especially to his former teammates who didn’t have his back during the 2021 season. Whatever happened that season just completely poisoned the well.

Are you kidding me? Are we already forgetting Gaudreau's lucrative Pizza 73 commercial?
