yeah there seem to be extreme viewpoints that either the expansion rules were far too easy , or they weren't easy at all but every GM except for the 2 expansion GMs were maroons
truth to me seems somewhere in between- with an expansion team, you get a clean slate. no stars (but you might be able to snag one or two that other teams can't afford or want to play) but good depth of your choosing(unlike in previous expansion drafts where you basically got AHLers of your choosing with no cap constraining any of the other teams)- most importantly no bad contracts- as its clear almost no GM can resist these eventually (heck Vegas is doing a nice job but they are threading the contract needle already just like all the other teams). minor little bonus of course for Vegas that there were already an elite team and got to escape the Seattle draft unscathed
I'd agree for sure that a small suite of teams esp in the first draft (Columbus, Florida, Minny come to mind) overplayed their hands, but a lot of the other decisions made weren't so obviously poor in retrospect
