Only reason they wouldn’t sign this summer is if they never really want to be here
Or Treliving doesn’t give them a fair contract

Well if he was surprised to hear he was traded he likely didn't have Calgary on his list. It is entirely possible that he was just surprised he was being asked to waive however the way it is described makes me think Calgary wasn't on his list of places he didn't want to go.

Can we just agree that people will like different things in where to live and most people will have fond ideas of the place they grew up in.. and not go after a bunch of cities for being terrible? All these guys in the NHL who are good enough to make a decision on where to play based on location AND that fans will care about if they leave - are all making way more money than 99.999% will see and live in completely different areas and their lives are wildly different than what we experience.

Yes. Those are the reasons any player wouldn't sign a contract anywhere (sub Treliving for applicable GM).

Hanifin and Lindholm trade was on June 23
Lindholm signed on July 16
Hanifin signed on August 30

Weren’t they both RFA’s that needed new contracts for the season though?

That must mean they're not signing here.

It’s simple but we didn’t find out from Johnny until the last minutes
Anyway, IMO same situation here , Treliving will do everything to sign them, especially Huberdeau. This is his legacy trade.

One thing both players brought up was the fans and environment in the Dome. I’m sure there are moments is the life of a career Panther where they wonder what it’s like to play in an actual hockey market that cares about their team. Seems to be something both players are looking forward to.

Optimistic about Weegar signing.
Francis needs to be voted off the island already.

No. Every contract is different.
I believe for some players, they give the team the list on July 1 and it's locked-in for the season until July 1 the following year. I believe most contracts are written like that, but not all.
For some players, it's an on-demand list. The player doesn't need to provide it until/unless the team asks for it.
Some players have other dates on which the list is due. Some have until the start of the regular season, others can wait until closer to the trade deadline.
* All this is based on comments I've seen from players/agents/GMs over the years.
At the very least, the lists can be updated annually (most on July 1). None are locked-in at the time of signing.

The difference is Lindholm and Hanifin were both RFAs, and needed a contract in order to start the season. Weegar and Huberdeau are completely different. They're still under contract, so there's way less urgency on their part to sign until they really talk it through with their family and think long term where they want to be.
Not saying there's no chance they sign with Calgary this summer, just saying the urgency to do so right away is way less.

Lol. I don’t know about that. Fair or unfair depends on a person’s opinion
But yes, he will do everything possible this case
So yeah my final conclusion is the only reason Huberdeau doesn’t get sign before the start of the year is he really doesn’t want to be here.

I guess life is not bad in Arizona however. Speaking of Arizona - how about we throw $1M at Phil Kessel for the top line :P
|
He will never sign here. It isn't a Canadian thing, it's a weather thing for Phil. I can't remember if it was the athletic or somewhere but I read his priority in location is year round nice weather now.

To be honest, Flying a player out for a day for a media availability and a photo opp is a waste of resources and time. Player probably doesn’t want to do it, and it really doesn’t matter to the average fan, we’re watching it on a screen anyway, not like we get to shake his hand.
