OK, but it just seems like something that they'd want to address.

In your imaginary world why wouldn't someone get an agreement with Mangiapane for a fixed long term contract as they are talking offer sheets with him next summer. Simply sign a 1 year deal for 2022-23 and we a have a 7x7 deal for you starting in 2023-24.
Or tell Gaudreau not to sign an extension with the Flames as they have a sweet long-term deal waiting for him as a UFA.
What is in the Springbank water?
|
A. According to Sureloss, you are completely wrong about it being tampering, which was my question.
B. It's the only way this deal makes sense based on the player and what he is worth now.
C. Mangiapane and Gaudreau are both under contract, so no one can talk to them at all. JK was not under contract - he was an RFA. If and when Mangiapane becomes an RFA, then yeah, the same scenario could play out. If and when Gaudreau becomes a UFA, that scenario makes zero sense.
D. The water in Springbank is pretty hard, thanks.

Bergevin not experiencing the summer of love, per say. After some very questionable draft choices and extremely bad PR, he getting burnt to a crisp

That playoff run probably saved his job but it shouldn't overshadow a very mediocre body of work. I think NHL GM's are petty and this is an example of why teams don't use the offer sheet more. That said Bergevin's half hearted offer sheet to Aho was always dumb as it was a no-brainer match that accomplished nothing but form the terms of the contract for the Canes. The Canes at least showed him how to do it properly as their offer puts him in a predicament.

I think because the Habs lucked out with the Finals run, they were basically forced to keep Ducharme, who I do not view as a competent head coach in the NHL - although he might get there.

I think what's confusing people is Kotkaniemi's RFA status. I think because the RFA rules favor the team over the player so much, it's easy to forget that the FA in RFA stands for free agent.

No, but it's also no enforceable. If he gets injured badly, or really pops, either side can legally negotiate another deal.
If it's already signed and in the GM's draw, it's clearly wrong.

So when does Montreal have to decide to match or walkaway from the offer sheet?

A lot, I would suspect.
I believe it is a smart move by Hurricanes. KK has big upside, IMO.

I often wonder whether Carolina might wind up being Laine's landing spot.

As for potential replacements if Kotkaniemi leaves, the Habs would likely try to trade the first-round pick for a proven player. Among the names that he could target with that pick are Christian Dvorak, Jack Eichel and TVA Sports includes Calgary’s Sean Monahan as a trade option. If Kotkaniemi leaves, there’s also a strong chance the Canadiens consider bringing back Eric Staal via the unrestricted free agent market.

This is such a stupid take. The team was built for the playoffs. They stumbled with injuries, got healthy and played the way they were supposed to play in the playoffs. Nothing to do with luck.
I'm torn as to what they should do here. This is on Bergevin for dragging his ass signing the kid. Should have been priority #1 as soon as Danault left. If they don't match they have Nick Suzuki and then a bag of pucks as their other centremen. He isn't worth anywhere close to $6 million, but I was looking forward to seeing what he could do next season with a lot more ice time.

The kid wanted the hell out of there, he never wanted to sign back there after the bungling they have done with his development and ice time.

I don’t know, what about that Habs roster screams Stanley Cup contender? The advanced stats? The personnel? I think of all the teams to make it to the finals over the past decade or so they are the main team that jumps out as “got hot at the right time”.
They barely made the playoffs, Leafs lost Tavares, Jets lost Schiefele, etc. No shame in admitting they got hot at the right time and had some good fortune. Still a great run.
Nobody had the Habs as a contender last year and for good reason.

You have to admit Toronto missing Tavares and Muzzin, Winnipeg missing Scheifele (his own fault) were pretty fortunate for Montreal.
