Yep - love Gio and wish he could retire a Flame - but seeing what Savard went for it's hard not to sell

I have my doubts on that. If he was available teams would be calling. The team acquiring could leave him unprotected for expansion draft.

In order to do that they would have to feel comfortable that Seattle would claim him. That's not a homerun.

Yeah, I don’t think Seattle would take Gio over the younger players that will be available. They will be building for the future mainly. Obviously they are going to also want a competitive team , but not at the expense of using the pick for a declining player that will be one and done. They can use free agency for that.

They are not going to go all youngsters . They are going to want some veterans. Also with Gio they can trade him at deadline for a 1st. I would think Gio would be very attractive for them for that reason alone.

Engelland was the oldest player Vegas took in their expansion draft at 35. As has been discussed at length previously, he was a special case for the Knights.

The next oldest players they took were Fleury, Bellemare, Methot, and Garrison, who were all 32.

I guess Francis could go in a different direction, but I'll be surprised if he takes a player who will be 38 years-old before they play their first regular season game.

There is a lot of real estate in between Gio and a youngster.

He's only under contract for another season. Giordano could provide much needed leadership for a team starting from scratch and while he's no longer the player he used to be he can still play a regular shift. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they took him.

If a team can retain 50% of his salary at the deadline he will return something good. Contenders can't afford a 6.75 third pair D all year long. But at the deadline they can better afford a guy who could be a 1.7 prorated cap hit. So Seattle can use him to get to the floor plus get picks in the 2022 draft. What other Flames exposed player could offer that?
