Exactly. Everyone praising blocks, are those good again? I thought they meant black hole of possession.
I like the tanev signing. I think fits a good role on the team and having guys like Andersson and Valimaki on cheap contracts allows the flames to spend on UFAs.
UFA signings are almost always criticized, but you're also not giving up any assets.

Also, Tanev performed very well analytically last night. He passed both the eye and spreadsheet test.

It’s still early, but I have been pleasantly surprised by him so far!

I've been surprised with Tanev, I was 100% against the signing and thought he would be a Neal on the back end. So far so good though, hopefully he keeps it up!

Well it is year one of a four year deal so I don't think we should have expected him to be terrible in year one or two or you would have to seriously wonder about the GM. As long as he can hold off a steep decline for the first 3 years the deal may not be as bad as it looked initially.

I think with this game alone Tanev has had more good games with the Flames than Neal ever did.

John Shorthouse has called all of the Canucks games on the radio for over 20 years. Back when Hughson was the local TV caller Shorthouse and Tommy Larscheid used to call all the radio games, and then when Hughson went over to HNIC they started doing both the radio and TV calls. It has only been within the last four years or so that the Canucks brought in a new radio guy; even still, Brendan Batchelor calls about four of every five games with Shorthouse still doing both for a few each season.

Are you saying Rick Ball wasn't calling Canucks radio games? Because:
Vancouver Canucks play by play voice moving to call Flames for Sportsnet
https://thecanuckway.com/2014/08/26/...mes-sportsnet/
Quote:
Longtime broadcaster Rick Ball will be moving from calling Canucks and BC Lions games for the radio station to a role calling Calgary Flames broadcasts for Rogers Sportsnet.
The Province reported on Monday night that Ball, who has been with TEAM 1040 for 11 years, will be ending his decade long plus run with the station to call Flames television broadcasts for Rogers.

Meanwhile, Shorthouse "was the radio voice of the Canucks from 1999–2000 until 2007-08, working alongside colour commentator Tom Larscheid."
Then he took over for Hughson on Canucks SNET regional games.

For sure, and that's the UFA market.
I liken it to the Michael Frolik contract. It was a year to long ... maybe $500k too high but he was money well spent for three plus seasons.
Part of doing business.
Tanev is older so there's that ... but hopefully as you say he's a solid top four for two years, a decent 5 for one year, and a 6 in the final year

Unless something major happens I think the Flames will have to choose between exposing Bennett and Backlund for the expansion draft. Dube and Mangiapane are solidly in the protect category for me.

It also goes on to quote The Province, saying that he "does play-by-play for the sports radio station’s B.C. Lions and Vancouver Canucks broadcasts.
What is missing is the fact that while Ball was the regular radio guy for the BC Lions, he only did fill-in for the Canucks broadcasts on the radio.
So, while I am not suggesting that Ball didn't call Canucks games, I am saying that he was never the regular guy. That was Shorthouse from the time that Hughson moved to TV in the late 90s, all the ay up until more recently when Brendan Batchelor took over the radio broadcasts.

I think that is wrong. Shorthouse was definitely still doing the radio broadcasts along with the telecasts all the way through to when the TEAM 1040 lost the broadcast rights to SN650 when Brendan Batchelor took over. He and Larscheid were still on the radio together until 2011 when Larscheid retired and was replaced by Dave Tomlinson.

If Bennett keeps playing like this, I don't think he's going to get selected in the entry draft anyway. On the ice for 2 goals against in WPG while centering the 4th line and 2 penalties vs VAN.

Shorthouse took over for Hughson doing Canucks SNET Pacific, and Rick Ball took Shorthouse's primary radio role on 1040. Though Shorthouse would do the radio calls for HNIC games when Hughson did the TV calls, but obviously the vast majority of Canucks games have been on SNET Pacific broadcasts for years now.
Regardless, you said Shorthouae called "all of the Canucks games on the radio for over 20 years" but that's not true after he moved to doing regional telecasts.
"Starting in October 2008, the station began splitting Canucks play-by-play duties between John Shorthouse and new announcer's Joey Kenward and Rick Ball. Kenward calls the Canucks broadcasts when the team is on the road, Ball calls the show for the home games. Both new hosts fill in only when Shorthouse does the television play-by-play for Rogers Sportsnet. After one season of this arrangement, from October 2009 until present, Ball handles all play-by-play duties while Shorthouse is calling games on Sportsnet. Kenward only calls games when Shorthouse is on Sportsnet and Ball is away calling BC Lions CFL football games."

True enough. But with regards to the bolded, I still don't believe that is correct. I have been looking for information about the radio calls between 2008–2011, but have been unable to find anything. I listen to a tonne of Canucks games on the radio, and I am quite convinced that Shorthouse and Larscheid were still doing the radio calls until Larscheid retired; I am certain of it during the Canucks 2011 playoff run.

Thanks for this.
I think my memory of Ball is fuzzy most likely because of how often he was doing the Lions broadcasts. It always felt like I heard a lot of Shorthouse and Kenward (I forgot about him), and Ball only occasionally.

I believe these types of signings are made with at least a reasonable expectation that the final year gets bought out. Two good years, a serviceable year and then a final year where the buyout is more appealing than spending that much on depth.
So a big factor is how good the player is those first few years. Hudler was another example of a good UFA signing who couldn’t play to his contract at the end. But the bad ones, like Raymond, Brouwer, Stone, Neal didn’t play up to expectations right from the hop. After two games, Tanev looks different than any of those.
