If Johnny Gaudreau is available, the New York Islanders should go all in. And by that, I mean there aren't many players the Isles shouldn't try and toss Calgary's way to get him. Mathew Barzal would be the only player the Isles shouldn't trade.
That means I'd consider moving players like Noah Dobson or Oliver Wahlstrom if it means Johnny Gaudreau comes back this way.

The only top line centre in the league who is at all rumoured to be moving is Eichel. And the only reason that is in the news is because of the turmoil in Buffalo following his going to the press with his displeasure. I think that this isn't a likely scenario.
Option 1 for Buffalo to choose : Monahan + Gaudreau + first round 2020 + Pelletier + Parsons (and that still wouldn't be enough)
Option 2 for Buffalo to choose : Monahan + Gaudreau + Gilles for Cozens + first round 2020 + first round 2021 + Montour + Middelstadt + Pekar
... which is pretty much a full reset of the rebuild going into 2021. I don't know if Buffalo does the first one, and I don't know if Calgary does the second.
What I could see is a small trade of moving pieces. Either a straight Gaudreau for Cozens + Pekar + Miller or a little Jankowski + Oilers 3rd for Middelstadt.

Some of these Eichel proposals are a little silly IMO.
Obviously he's amazing but he's got a career high of 82 points (so far). This isn't McDavid we're talking about.

I've seen some people talk about wanting to sign Tyson Barrie as a UFA... which might not be a bad idea.
But if he's available next summer, I think I might prefer the Flames try to bring back one Dougie Hamilton... am I alone?

Hamilton didn't fit in the room I thought?
That would be quite the coup by Treliving though.

I thought that was largely conjectural. From everything I gleaned from listening to Tre/insiders I just got the impression he wanted to deal from a position of strength to make a move for a top RHS forward.
That said, man, yeah, he'll be expensive. It was just a random idea, that's what this thread is for!

The right return for me from Buffalo is their 2020 1st, Middlestat and Montour/Miller
Getting one of Rossi/Perfetti/Drysdale/Raymond/Holtz would be a huge boost to the prospect pool. Adding Middlestat would also be a potential high reward potential as he was a recent top 10 pick. Seemed to fall out in Buffalo last year in a similar fashion as Jankowski did here. Adding a right shot Dman also fits a need with Brodie and Hamonic potentially gone.
Everything I have read about this draft and those prospects has me really excited at the thought of getting into the top 10.

I could see the Flames targeting Barrie depending how free agency pans out.
I don’t see Dougie wanting to come back here regardless of the Flames interest. He is also going to be getting at least $8M on his next contract and he is not worth it.

I think Hamilton has an extremely high ceiling. Wouldn't be surprised to see him win a Norris.
I would be a fan if it worked.

Hamilton? Is going to come back to Calgary as the top UFA dman on the market? highly doubtful with how it all ended and he is gonna get PAID.
He is also the kinda guy that will sign in a non-hockey market

This is the first I've heard of Dougie requesting a trade.

Still early in his career, he will smash that. It's really that he's doing it with a lack of support many nights and the fact that he's often the one keeping the sabres in games or being the difference maker that allows them to pick up points when they otherwise shouldn't. The last season or two he's come into prime iginla level of impact making.
Seeing what he did practically on his own against the Flames was something to behold.

Yes I know, he's awesome.
Not getting two 1st liners, a 1st round pick, top prospect and more in a trade though.

He’s coming in at $10mil, at least. Karlsson just signed for $11.5, while on the decline. Hamilton is getting better, is bigger, and I would argue is a way bigger offensive threat today than Karlsson is.

Doesn’t have the resume of Karlsson but I don’t disagree with your points. What Pietrangelo signs for this summer could be a good gauge of what Hamilton is going to get.

Well, it ended so well here for both Hamilton & the Flames how could these two not want to get back together?

They should pick up Hamilton, not because he's good (and he is) but because they can then trade him for more guys like Lindholm and Hanafin!

Agree with this. I'd add Point, too.
If there's a way to get a true 1A Centre and keep Tkachuk and Lindholm, I'm all in.
Ideally you keep Monahan by giving up LD though.

Most NHL Teams are averse to trading what they know as good players. For the most part they will happily part with a Prospect that they think they didn't evaluate correctly, but they do tend to hold onto their best ones. Draft picks are a bit easier to coax in deals as GM's don't have a face to the pick, so they don't spend their lifetime regretting trading a player they never picked. Al Coates was lucky to get Iginla before the World Juniors that year because I don't think Dallas would have moved him after that. Maybe you get lucky and you get a Filip Forsberg situation...but that's pretty rare.
So for that reason, I think the best way to get a prime asset out of a Gaudreau trade is to try and get a teams first round pick. Otherwise, it's pick from our endless list of B Grade material which at best become Eric Nystrom like players, plus a could be good player with not so good contract (Lucic-esque). At which point...you are better to keep him and use him for two years and than clear out the cap space and start fresh.
The other thing is that Eichel just got a GM and entire AHL staff fired. The Sabres are not going to move him. Trying to coax a good young potential top line center who's not a pending UFA from a team is pretty freaking difficult. So yeah, Barzal, Eichel, Barkov...unless the Flames have a Seth Jones to trade I don't see there being a deal to be had, and even at that point...I don't think any of those teams has a big enough need on defence to move a center for D.
