I know that 12 cartoons were printed and one of them had an Arab caraciture with a bomb in his headdress. what about the other 11? Were they just drawings? In historical context? Worse?

Is there any reason to take it further by re-printing it and causing further anger here in Canada where generally the muslims are well behaved? Why risk animosity and misunderstandings in this country too? And it's already started with the hate crimes accusations.
The Jews are well behaved, I think the papers need to stop printing articles or cartoons about Israel- why risk animosity and misunderstandings?

"the Muslims are well behaved" - Do you think they suddenly won't behave? Should we be happy they have behaved up until now? Are they children that need coddling so they won't break anything?

I keep coming back to sayings:

You do not have the right to not be offended.

First they came for the Cartoonists..........

Well that's nice. If this is to be believed then there are some extremist Americans who will drive people out of the country "so fast" under the threat of death for exercising their freedom of expression.

That doesn't sound much better than some extremists in Pakistan rioting in the streets, does it?

I am pretty sure the Brits have called for an investigation. The US convicted soldiers for the mistreatment of PoWs in Iraq.

Actually my comment was directed at Shawnski's repeated use of the word "civilized". How "civilized" do you think we look right now? What is more civilized? The videotaped beating of children or the stonethrowing riot? I think it's a toss-up at best.

As for the "investigation" if I'm a fellow living with my kids in a pile of rubble in Fallujah I'm not so sure that I'd be impressed to find out that the guy who attached a car battery to my brother's nuts is under investigation.

Better than Ezra.

Turns out our champion of free expression is facing heat after one of his columnists disparaged Ralph Klein's wife's aborginal heritage.

Flipperboy got called on the carpet several times whilst employed with the Calgary Herald.

Haha Stupid Ezra!

No, you would probably want to start a violent riot!

Not too responsible of those news agencies broadcasting and printing those images. I wonder why they did it? Did they not think that a lot of Iraqis/Muslims would be offended by seeing such things?

Check this out:

http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/Con...path=News/News

Quote:
Officials in Iraq and the United States have expressed concern that SBS showed the images, saying they could further inflame anti-American sentiment in the Middle East.

Carey defended SBS's decision to show the images. "We felt a responsibility ... to broadcast them," he said. ``It is a matter of free speech."

Australian Prime Minister John Howard said Thursday that SBS had the right to decide whether to air the images, but suggested that if the photos showed acts that have already been exposed and prosecuted, there was no reason to publish them.

Familiar?

Dolphin said he was trying to make the point that Klein's wife exercises a great deal of influence on government policy – but is not an elected official.

Its quite the news flash that life long partners have influence over our politicians.

"Because of the political climate in this country, people are not going to go on the record expressing their honest opinions on natives because it gets them into trouble. It gets them censored by newspaper councils and things like that."

Actually, quoting without attribution in a personal attack simply makes you a lazy reporter.

Meanwhile, The Supreme Islamic Council of Canada has filed a complaint with the Alberta Human Rights guys over publication of the cartoons. Good to see . . . . . not that they have a chance in hell of succeeding.

Next thing you know, they'll be asking for "Freedom Fries."

FYI, I found this both interesting and funny considering the topic we're on: Elton John wins a libel case after a newspaper said he acted "in a self-important, arrogant and rude manner" at a charity function.

I love that an Isreali paper is publishing their own anti-semitic cartoon contest to prove they can make them more viscious and comedic than anyone else to demonstrate their free speech.

It's just like that episode of Seinfeld where he says Jews can and have the right to make fun of themselves better than anybody else.

We need to restore an irony thread for stuff like this.

This is all serious of course . . . . . but in a comical way. You can't help but be politically incorrect and guffaw about a reaction that confirms your worst stereotypes.

EDIT: Meanwhile, the United Church of Canada directs a statement to Muslims:

In a letter to the Islamic Council of Imams, the church also expressed its regrets over decisions by media outlets in Canada and the other countries to publish the caricatures, which have triggered fatal rioting in some regions of the world.

“We believe that the intention of publishing the cartoons has little to do with freedom of expression and much to do with incitement to racial and religious hatred,” senior church representatives said in the letter released to the media on Friday.

aPs="boxR";var boxRAC = fnTdo('a'+'ai',300,250,ai,'j',nc);
“The cartoons suggest that Islam itself teaches, condones and encourages violence, bombings and the mistreatment of women. Furthermore, the implication is that all Muslims believe so as well.

“This we know to be untrue.”

This delivers another blow to Islam's perception by the West.

For most people now, I'm imagining the image of Islam to be a raised assault rifle with a burning flag at the feet as what Islam is.

Alright, it's blasphemous. Fine. Enough is enough. Bring yourselves out of the dark ages. I'm not as lively as Cheese, but this SERIOUSLY is the problem with organized religion. So many people just can't seem to refrain from taking it personally.

In a SEPARATE cartoon controversy, Russia closes a newspaper that printed Mohammed with other religious figures

In a controversy with echoes of the Islamic anger over Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad, the authorities in a central Russian city today ordered the closing of a newspaper that published a cartoon showing Muhammad along with Jesus Christ, Moses and Buddha.

The cartoon, published on Feb. 9 in the official city newspaper in Volgograd, prompted some criticism and a federal criminal investigation but no public outrage. That may be, in large part, because it depicted the figures respectfully, renouncing violence, though Islamic teachings forbid any depiction of Muhammad.

"Well, we did not teach them that," Moses says in a caption as the four watch a television set showing two groups confronting each other with banner and clubs and hurling stones. The cartoon appeared on Page 5, accompanying an article on an agreement signed by regional political parties and organizations to combat nationalism, xenophobia and religious conflicts.

Conflicting reports... cbcnews.ca made mention that it was 1.5 Million rupees, about $29000 CAD.

Still...a bounty?

**** it, post Muhammed all over the world, on billboards, in newspapers, everywhere.

"Mohammed Yousaf Qureshi, prayer leader at the historic Mohabat Khan mosque in the conservative northwestern city of Peshawar, announced the mosque and the Jamia Ashrafia religious school he leads would give a $25,000 reward and a car for killing the cartoonist who drew the prophet caricatures - considered blasphemous by Muslims."

"This is a unanimous decision of by all imams (prayer leaders) of Islam that whoever insults the Prophet deserves to be killed and whoever will take this insulting man to his end will get this prize," Qureshi told about 1,000 people outside the mosque after Friday prayers. "

I guess if other people, especially young people, take what this clown says seriously, it's no wonder it's a vicious cycle. If someone insults an imaginary person, go ahead and kill that person.........fantastic logic.

And kill the guy and you get a 'prize'? What is this, some kind or radical Muslim amusement fair?

I thought this part was pretty funny, in a sad sort of way:

"Qureshi did not name any cartoonist in his announcement and did not appear to be aware that 12 different people had drawn the pictures."

So he doesn't know who to kill.........he just wants someone dead.

Sad, sad, sad.

Since they usually kill with suicide bombings, who would get the reward?

They should give the money and car in advance so the person can buy a bomb and drive it into the cartoonists.
