He's almost forced to file the lawsuit if for no other reason to make it absolutely clear that he was a victim of defamation, or at least he believe so.
So you had to look it up. Thought as much. By time Sandmann gets through school and is ready for the workforce six years or more will have passed. That information will be so far down the rabbit hole it won't register. For example, I used a very uncommon name from a high profile event (attempted murder) that made weeks worth of headlines five years ago in one of the largest media markets in the US, and it didn't even make the first 100 hits for my search. It faded into the woodwork. Why would this be any different? I'm not certain that some report from six years ago is going to trump that Ivy League degree or the recommendations of his frat brothers. People like this don't get jobs through regular channels, so I don't see how this is going to follow him around. It might, but a kid with an Ivy League degree has an advantage that most don't and dirt doesn't stick to them very often.

Also, you pointing to an actual racist and trying to compare the two is exactly why the defamation suit might have some legitimate legs. You, despite all the evidence to the contrary, still believe Nick Sandmann is on the same level as a grown adult attending a white supremacy rally.
Actually, I don't. Where does the racism claim come from here? Is it because of the hat? Personally, I don't buy the whole argument of the MAGA hat being a symbol of racism. I kind of developed this feeling after the whole Virginia episode, the fall out from it, and then the wall stuff. I see it more of a symbol of the "me first" generation, people that want their interests served more so than the needs of the whole community, and abdication of responsibility for their actions. Racist? No. Self-centered and self-serving, yes. Different beast.

The MAGA hat isn't about self-interest versus community, it's about trolling. He wore the hat to provoke a reaction which, sure enough, is exactly what happened.

There is that component as well. But the whole intent of "Make America Great Again" is not about trolling or racism. It is about achieving everything that Trump believes and stands for. I think the core of that is greed, personal interests, and removing all barriers from achieving personal enrichment. This just happens to be core to the beliefs of a lot of American conservatives as well.

I don't really want to wade into this debate too much, but the above quote isn't all that accurate anymore. I mean ####...John Wayne was "cancelled' yesterday by a bunch of people on Twitter for things he said in an interview decades ago. He's been dead for 40 years! If the last few years have showed us anything, it's that if you have any transgressions or skeletons in your closet, from however long ago, people will dig them up to discredit you or sideline you if it suits their agenda.

So don't give them an agenda. Let this go down as a one-off incident and let it die on the vine. Youthful enthusiasm got the better of you as an impressionable 16 year old. But now he's waging full on war. You're right, this type of stuff never goes away, but only because it is going to establish a precedent.

That's a lot to hope for, especially when your other option is to make so much money you never need anything from anyone ever again.

Except the potential for that is so slim. This is a first amendment rights case. Tough to win. Payouts are not that big unless you can prove damages. Here are the top examples from 2017.

That's the thing though, he's damned if he does and he's damned if he doesn't. He may be a dickhead, but the media falsely skewed him as some kind of aggressor...and the video proves that he wasn't and they ran with it anyway. There have been a number of journalists putting out articles (The Atlantic, CBC, etc.) admitting they jumped to conclusions and skewered this kid for things he didn't do. The damage is done though, you go onto any left leaning site and read comments regarding this story and this kid is basically Hitler to these people. Yeah he went to a rally that most of us find repulsive, but that's not the issue here. This is going to follow him regardless of whether he fights it or not. If I were him, I'd be filing a lawsuit too.

Is it? Sounds like he has the best lawyer in the country for this sort of thing, who probably wouldn't have taken this on unless he saw potential for big money, plus he has a ton of potential targets.

e: most of the lawsuits in that article that happened in the US resulted in payouts.

He will get paid millions just to go away when all is said and done.

This the first of what will likely be dozens of lawsuits Im guessing.

I don't think he'll get too much, maybe a low seven figure settlement. Still nice for him, but I don't see anything too big for him, these are tough cases to win.

I get a kick out of the fact that if you were to make a who's who list of "gee I bet that poster is probably racist" it would include you and everyone who thanked your post. A few missing names but pretty funny nonetheless.

Complains about "passing judgment along tribal lines"...

I'm definitely amazed icecube hasn't been sin binned at any point.

Yeah, but at least I can still look myself in the mirror and know I'm not a racist person. So I have that going for me.

I'm only dishing back what's being served up. Sin bin me and go look back and see how many others are deserving of the same fate.

To be perfectly honest, if icecube deserves a sin binning, so too does a handful of other people in this thread.
