Does anyone remember any player being traded from Toronto that has lived up to the hype? I can't think of one off the top of my head.

I totally forgot about Tavares. I was putting him behind Marner. But that's a closer call.
I'm not putting him behind any D or Kadri. I see the argument, but I was being generous.

I don't think Nylander is going to move if the ask is a first round pick, a young top 9 with upside and a stud D.
For a holdout wanting to be overpaid by 2M, who is Torontos 5th best player.
Edit : 6th best player if you include Anderson.

faceoffs =/= playing centre. When Nylander played centre, it was behind Matthews and Kadri, with pretty mediocre players. He played centre something like 10% of his time. If you think he's ready to jump in at number 2 centre, I disagree.
Your comparison, Lindholm, also was not anywhere near a full time centre, and yet he took about 150 more faceoffs.

Not interested. T.O wants too heavy of a compensation for a player that would rather sit than sign a fair market deal. He is better than average but he is asking 80pt per year money.
Let T.O resolve their own problem, GM's should stand back and wait for the Leafs to come down to move their headache for a more reasonable return.

Not to Calgary.
Kessel did very well, and perhaps better than in Toronto, after landing into almost a perfect situation.
The Leafs traded their number one pick (third overall) in 1991 for Tom Kurvers. This turned out to be Scott Neidermayer. However, they could also have picked Peter Forsberg, Kovalev, or Naslund.
In fact, at the time of the trade, the Leafs were on pace to finish dead last. Which would have meant they traded Eric Lindros for Tom Kurvers. They ahd to scramble and make a trade with Quebec to improve the team (and make Quebec worse) to finish a few points out of last place.

Most I would offer TO is Stone and Backland. But TO wont look at that and I quite frankly would not want Nylander at $7M+. Lived too many years with his fathers up and DOWNS..

The thing people need to keep in mind is that all you are getting is signing rights. It's like trading a pending UFA right before July 1, to a team that feels good about signing him (say, Jaybo). Or, put another way, you are trading a guy who you are now committed to paying whatever he wants, because now that Dec. 1 deadline is all yours, and you just spent a bunch of assets to get there. What GM wants that headache?
ETA: Is Toronto allowing potential trade partners to contact Nylander and his agent about the contract?

They don't need permission. As an unsigned restricted free agent he is allowed to talk to all teams right now.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Therefore I would imagine any trade for Nylander would come with a new deal already in place.

Thanks - I thought they had exclusivity over RFA negotiating. It doesn't sound like any teams have done this. If they have, I suppose he's using them against the Leafs.

I think any trade would require the flames (or any other partner) to have a deal in place before the trade call is made. The power in this is actually with the trading partner in this situation.

The power against the Leafs is with the trading partner. The power for that trading partner with Nylander is with Nylander.

Disagree. If the Leafs put a deal in place with Calgary, as a precondition Calgary and Nylander have to a contract in writing. Then Nylander has two choices: Sign or pass. And if Nylander passes, he's taking a huge gamble that (a) The leafs will come back and sign him for themselves - extremely unlikely or (b) Toronto will then find another trade partner for him.
In fact, if Dubas was smart - and all indications are that he is - he would wait until the eleventh hour and say "here's the only trade we can make, but you have to agree to terms. Alternatively, this is our final offer. Pick your poison."
