But if this team delivers, he should squarely get the credit. His fingerprints are all over this club.

We loaded up our top 6 in which they are all signed and should be productive for at least 2-3 seasons (depending when Neal and/or Backs begin to decline - if at all). We have young legitimate long-term top 6 players in Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk and Lindholm.
We got young guys in Bennet, Jankowski and Czarnik that could grow and provide more to offset the potential decline of Backs/Neal.
We also have 3 high end defensive prospects that should be ready to contribute regularly before the contracts of Stone, Brodie and Hamonic are needing renewal - not to mention a 21 year old high end defenseman we will sign in short order.
We have at least one forward spot up for grabs come training camp and I can only imagine how excited Mangiapane, Foo and Dube are and how prepared and ready to compete they will be next month.
I don't get why you are so doom and gloom. Outside of goaltending we are pretty well setup throughout the organization.
Sure we could use some other top flight forward prospects and a sure thing in net, on the way, but I'm pretty stoked about the future.

Because it was approaching buyout day and for the past year you can’t darn well sneeze here without someone saying Brouwer should be bought out? Probably should go buy the Celestine Prophecy
I see a lot of rejoicing. Whatever. Gulutzan sucked and got less out of many players than he should have
If I pull out 4 people that have room for improvement this year - Peters, Smith, Brodie, Brouwer - Brouwer is the least impactful in terms of role.
I hope that Smith can play net at home as well as on the road, Brodie finds his form, and Peters can actually succeed as a coach, despite not having done so at the NHL level.
Wish Brouwer well and bet he does better wherever he lands than expected

Not sure where this comes from.
It's not hating on the guy to point out that he's a step behind, and seems to drag down everyone he plays with.
The stats speak to it, but the eye test is even more telling.
He's a black-hole out there, and I'd be surprised to see him make any NHL roster at this point, because he's no longer an NHL caliber player I don't think.

I feel badly that Brouwer is on his way out. It is disappointing that things did not work out here well.
I hope that he is able to carry on with his career elsewhere.
Best of luck.

Simple. Not being coached by Gulutzan. The team was a mess. Some guys can thrive when put in a position to succeed. The guy coaching last year was awful. Nothing that happened on the team escapes that bit of context.

Yea I don't buy that. Not disagreeing the coaching was bad, but it didn't make him a step behind the play and a black hole with regard to possession. He was terrible no matter what line he was on, including power play time.
The things that made him bad had little to do with coaching.
Guess we'll see in September. I don't think he'l be in the league, never mind improving.

Good article about the cautions of the old model of paying players for past performance. Really it was asinine that the Flames gave Brouwer a big raise at 30 with his best days behind him;

So we should all hate the Neal deal?
Man I hope Neal puts up 30 next year or it’s going to be hell on here.

I agree with everything you said except the NHL is full a friends, I think he'll sign on the cheap to try to earn another decent contract

There certainly is major risk. He's worked really hard on his skating over the years to go from below average skater to above average but guys that aren't gifted skaters usually lose a step or two early in their 30's.

Gotta think Edmonton is jealous we got out of our boat anchor contract and they are still staring down the barrel of another 5 years with theirs.

I did not mean to come across as doom and gloom. This is Treliving's team and he deserves credit for whatever success they might enjoy. My point, which was poorly made, was that I wouldn't expect a lot of changes to what we see now under his watch. Goaltending might be an exception but that will be tricky to make a big change IMO.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe Lucic's agent structured his deal in a way that most of the money was in signing bonuses making it "buy-out proof"
I don't exactly know how that works, I assume the real dollar savings are larger but the penalty is higher or something? but thats what i've heard.
either way, pretty funny that edmonton won't be able to buy that one out, and cant buy out russel because he actually will be a contributor on that blueline

Yes Lucic's contract is "buy-out proof".
This is essentially because all signing bonuses are paid to the player regardless of a buyout and therefore decreases the cap savings that buying out the contract usually provides.

I disliked Troy Brouwer the player as much as anybody, but I don't like this headline, even if it's sensationalized.
