Shouldn't matter that Gaudreau still got his shot away. Free shot as it were. A penalty should have been called when Rinne held it.
The message I get from watching that officiating is that players should embellish to ensure the call is made. Bad message to send.
The penalty should always be the action not the response.

Quite enjoyed the Nashville feed last night. Don't know who their PbP guys are, but they were quite complimentary to the Flames - lots of praise for their speed and play. Now, to be fair, lots more praise for Pekka, but we remember those classic games with Rinne vs Kipper, so no surprise there.
I thought the Flames were extremely unlucky not to have scored in the 2nd particularly where they really carried a lot of the play. The game was closer than it looked, and glad to see they finally just gutted it out in the 3rd and stuck a couple behind Rinne. I really liked Ferland's goal - he had to stretch, corral it, move to the backhand and lift it all in one set of motions - nice skills to see from him. I still think he can be a very effective player in the right positions. He has the tools; needs the confidence, and this will help.

That should have been a penalty. There were many missed calls last night. If Gaudreau just flopped down he would have got a penalty shot or PP. Pretty pathetic reffing.

Totally agree - it should always be based on the action. Just doesn't seem to work that way. Would be interested to see someone like Kerry Fraser's comments on that situation.

Pretty sure they would not have called it even if Johnny fell.

The refs arm was half way into the air when Johhny wobbled. You bet he would have called it.

He lifted his arm to call it when Gaudreau stumbled, but then Gaudreau skated through the slash and the ref then dropped his arm.
Seems to suggest he was only calling it based on how Johnny responded to the infraction, which is outrageous.

At the very least, Hamilton's counting stats aren't bad. 6 points in 9 games is a solid pace. Although, I'd agree he hasn't played his best hockey.

A few around here just like sling crap at him for the joy of it, apparently.

People are just sad that he's not Chris Pronger. Playing with Gio allows him to play aggressive and get points, the captain is still our most useful d-man.

I think Johnny has had his share of non-calls and that may have played into it. Same thing happened first game last season against the oilers, McDavid gets the call while Johnny's got ignored. Johnnhy should get credit for not embellishing, or start complaining to the refs at that point.

I actually didn't notice him put it back down and was expecting a power play. Had to rewind to see that bull####. He took 15' away from Johnnys shot preparedness because he tripped him. Should be a penalty regardless of getting a shot off.
If he was tripped like that in the neutral zone, and got back up the same way, it would have been called.

Fun game, I thought outside a few moments in the first the Flames played really well. They are such a different team when they keep their feet moving. I am fully on board with Nashville, I like that team and the brand of hockey they play.
With regards to Hamilton. I think the knock on him is really his lack of intensity. I think that is the feeling around Brodie and Monahan as well. These are all exceptional hockey players but they always seem to leave you wanting more. With Hamilton it is almost like he has no idea how to play big and physical. Jankowski did it a few times last night where he simply but his body between the player and the puck and rubbed a guy out. Neither Brodie or Hamilton do that, they almost look like they have no idea how to do it. These are pretty minor things but I think they add up to wanting more. You see glimpses but never the consistency.
I liked Jankowski's game, that is a center. If that continues you really have to think one of Glass or Stajan are waived and the easy call is Glass. I think Jagr with Bennett and Jankowski and Lazar to the 4th line. I, unlike others wasn't overly impressed with Lazar last night, lots of effort but a lot of his movements felt pointless. Not enough control in his game. Understandable as he is trying to make an impression but he is not there yet. Can Lazar be an effective center? Stajan is way to slow. I also felt, for Brouwer, he had another solid game. I really have no issue with him on this team and he is playing his role quite well.
I really, really want Brodie and Versteeg off of the #1 PP unit. Get Hamilton and Giordano back in there with more point shots. I do like how Hamilton seems to be calling for the puck a lot more. He needs to be more assertive out there.
Anyways, great game. Two in a row where I felt we were clearly the better team. Hoping for more tonight.
