Smith hasn't had above average stats since 2012.
Mind you it's hard to backstop a struggling non playoff team that does not do enough to win games, but you wouldn't be bringing in a guy that isn't comfortable with losing frequently..

Just because he hasn't requested a trade, doesn't mean he's comfortable with losing frequently.

Ya, we totally should have given up our future high skilled power forward for a goalie. Good call.

Any chance of getting Robin Lehner's name added to the list? He's an RFA in Buffalo and is 25yrs old.

My head says go for a veteran like MAF. My heart says Gillies will be there by the end of the year.
Would love to be in a situation like Nashville where we have to choose between two stellar goalies.

Yes, they must select 14 forwards, 9 defencemen, and 3 goalies (total of 26). The other 4 picks can be from any position. That means they could pick 7 goalies if they wanted to.

This allows Parsons to develop in the AHL for a few years while we go for it with Schneider.

It's hard to say what the market is for goalies. I'm always way off. But, FWIW, personally, I would go as high as something like the following:
16th OA
3rd rounder we save for not re-signing Elliott
Choice of Parsons/Gillies
Choice of any prospect (Andersson, Klingyton, Jankowski etc.)
Overpayment? Ya, and Jankowski would be a painful give and I would prefer not to, but I'm desperate for an elite, clear cut, number 1 goalie.

Is there any traction to these Schneider and Rask rumours or is it more just wishful thinking? I'd be all over either but I haven't heard their names out there outside of here.

That give could be enough to cripple this organization for years. No way flames offer such a package

Stat watching is difficult on goalies, so it becomes almost irrelevant comparing a goalie's SV% over the last few years.
For instance - Raanta does indeed have better stats than Johnson over the last 3 or 4 seasons, but what kind of a team was in front of him? How many golden opportunities and second/third chances was Johnson required to make vs Raanta?
You need a lot more stats to backup any story you would like me to believe about your favorite goalie vs my favorite goalie. SV% as a stat is nice to know, but doesn't really tell me much.
Not that I am saying that Johnson is better than Raanta (I think I voted Raanta in this poll, actually). I am just saying that simply going by one or two metrics isn't doing much in the way of convincing me one goalie is vastly superior to another. I like the fact that Johnson had a .920 in front of a terrible Buffalo team, and that he did do a great job in carrying the Flames for a while. Has Raanta done so in his time with Chicago or New York? (I don't know).
I just find that there is a whole lot of 'noise' about goalies in this thread, but not much in any thorough analysis of a particular favorite. Why does someone like a particular goalie so much? What do they see in him that makes a person feel he would be a good choice for Calgary? That's what I am hoping to learn from this thread.
For me, the most important aspect for a goalie is to just be consistent. Make the saves you are supposed to make. Make an occasional highlight reel save when the game is on the line? Great! But I will give those up every time for no bad goals. That is all I am hoping for in net for now. Just some consistently decent goaltending ala Fred Brathwaite. I am hoping for the next Miika, but I will take the next Fred for now.
Flames don't need a goalie to steal games like Talbot does for Edmonton. They just need a goalie not to lose games for them. That is all I am asking for with regards to that position. Just some consistently average goaltending. Dependable. I have no idea who can provide that any longer.
Hope the Flames get 5 goalies. Screw up 2 games in a row, you get thrown on waivers. Go through them all. That is how confident I feel on the available options. (and no, I don't expect the Flames to get 5 goalies - just illustrating my point in how little confidence I have in any goalies at the moment).

Schneider was acquired for the 9th overall which turned out to be Horvat.
Since that trade, Schneider has gotten 3 years older and his playoff win total has not changed, and he had a bad year last year.
I think the 16OA and Mason McDonald and maybe a 3rd round pick should be the max Treliving offers.
Schneider is really unproven in the playoffs.

Did I say we should have given up #6? I said we should have got him last summer. Not to mention NOBODY thought Tkachuk would last that long.NOT to mention if we got MAF we don't how the season would have went. We already know what we got with Elliott

I definitely take Gaudreau and Benn over Hall. I have him in the same tier as Forsberg and Marchand so he's the 5th best LW at worst imo. I take Hall clearly over Panarin, Ehlers, Patio-ready, Hoffman and Ovechkin.

Definitely better:
Ovechkin
Benn
Marchand
Panarin
Gaudreau
Forsberg
Debatable:
Saad
Zetterberg
Marleau
Pacioretty
Hoffman
Steen
Landeskog
(Maybe more?)
Hall is, at best, in the 5-10 range for LW.
It's not hard to argue that he doesn't even belong in the top ten, period.

Hall is better than Ovechkin in pre-trade Oiler fantasyland.
But that's about it.
