It seems better than the scramble defence of last year. Still a heck of a long way to go before becoming coherent.

Unfortunate game for Janks so far. 2 obstruction penalties and he lost his guy there

This is my first viewing of the Flames this pre-season, but it looks like there's still a lot of work to do on becoming a "5 man unit". Even before that last goal, it looked like a bit of a fire drill at times.

You aren't goign to learn anything about systems play in the first couple preseason games.
This is a group of guys that have barely been on the ice together.

In his defense, taking penalties and coming back onto the ice is unfamiliar territory to him.

Two bad penalties for Janko, then missed his man causing a goal. Think he is bound for Stockton.
Not ready yet!
Also good job Ferland!

Just wanted to say, Bennett's defensive play down low completely reversed the momentum in that last sequence. Single-handedly rubbed his guy out and turned the puck over.
I think he's gonna be fine at center full time this year.

And even still, they look better already than the Flames of October 2015.

No, of course, I'm not trying to beat them up. It just looks like the Flames from last year still without the shot-blocking, which makes me sad. They need to work on it obviously, but hopefully they're ready for game 1.

Please bench Chiasson. The pronunciation of his name is driving me crazy.

I haven't heard a French name butchered this bad, this often since the 2013 awards season when Les Miserables was butchered repeatedly.

Pre-season is experimental systems, players and exhibition gameplay for player evaluation and conditioning with mild competitiveness, mostly from the players trying to earn a spot and avoid being cut. There is no way to compare a regular season game to a pre-season game in anyway.
I've watched dozens of these it's not pro-season hockey.

Giordano holding the line like a boss.
Lead to a Tkachuk goal!

I know there is lots of optimism but I have a feeling this is going to be another long season.
Still lacking top end skill and depth in all positions but goaltending.
I hope they catch some lightning in a bottle but I think this is still another rebuild season and there will likely be considerable growing pains for some players if Gulutzan is really goign to transform the team to be a more solid 3 zone squad.
I actually am really enjoying the lack of shotblocking. Elliot and Johnson have looked good stopping pucks and I feel like the Flames have looked more organized in the defensive zone (major breakdowns notwithstanding) than they did when they were laying all over the ice last year.
I think a positive is that Hamilton looks really good so far. If he has a strong start along with the rest of the club they could ride that out to the playoffs. I think going forward Hamilton's offensive game will be a real catalyst for whether the organization has success or not.
