Thanks appreciate the help anyways.

I'm only getting 40 Mbps off my computer through wifi only a few feet away from the modem...

Something isn't adding up.

Just for kicks, plug in the computer with a cable and see what kind of speeds you get.

I did just now and got 175mbps. Which is great but I wonder why I can only get 90 through wifi on my phone and only in the mid 40's on my computer.

About 5-10 feet from where I'm doing the tests from.

Looks like some people are getting full speed on 5ghz wifi all over the house. Others are getting poor performance couple feet from their routers. The fact that wifi is at 78% strength when the laptop is 2 feet from the route is intriguing.

Possibly wifi interference in the house? I think there's apps that can test for that.

Try a newer wifi device if you have one or a friends or family members if you don't. Wifi on 5ghz should be faster but it loses speed quicker with distance compared to 2.4ghz.

You might have to play around with the Channel on the Hitron configuration. It is usually defaulted to Auto but you change it. I played around on mine starting with Channel 36 I believed and I was getting 80Mbps then when I switched to 40, I got a better results.

The problem with testing these things over wifi is that wifi itself doesnt have as much actual throughput as you would think.

Here is a good article on the different wireless standards and what you typically might see in real life.

I see that Telus put up a bulletin at my building, they are coming by to talk fiber next week. Is that the reason why Shaw is coming out with this deal? Telus fiber rolling out to more communities? The download is both 150, but Telus has 30 upload while Shaw has 15. I couldn't find a price on Telus' website (thats probably a bad thing). Anyone know the going rate for Telus fiber? The last time I checked they wanted to charge me $150 for an install of internet. With Shaw at least I can pick up the modem myself. So is it confirmed that we are able to bridge the newest modem?

For those people running personal routers - don't forget to update your Dynamic QoS Settings or else you won't see these new speeds.

Has nothing to do with because shaw is starting on Docsis 3.1. The real reason is with all the existing upgrades and being able to offer to 90+% customers, it is time to go on offence and try to bring subscriber numbers back up. Telus only has < 10% of its customer base on fiber so they are not worried at all, especially
With Docsis 3.1 around the corner. Telus will be catching up, even after they launch fiber to a majority of its customer base.

Shaw is going to send a technician. I'm only getting 30-40 Mbps on my computer and about 90 on my phone and only 25-50 on my hard wired ps4.

Had it installed yesterday and very happy with the speeds. Only problem I have is with the TV. There's no order whatsoever to the channels. With Telus all the sports channels were grouped together, news channels etc. I know you can go into menu and scroll accross to the folders there and they are grouped but prefer to have it done in the guide.

I presume there's no way to do this?

Ok, so I need some negotiating tips...

Currently I am on a grandfathered plan that consists of :

Classic cable
Movie Central
HD+
HIgh Speed 10

Total is 180.60 / month TX incl

Shaw has offered the following:

Internet 150
Premier TV
Movie Central
Super Channel

Total 190.89 + Tax

The problem is that between me and the rest of the family we use most of these packages.

Any way to get a reduction ?

Tips / Strategies ???

Thanks.

I don't think you can re-organize the guide, it's just ordered by channel number. Honestly with so many channels I think the guide is pretty much useless anyhow. You can select channels you watch frequently as favourites if you don't want to go to the folders.

In my experience Shaw is willing to negotiate on all of their packages. The best way I've found is to call with a purpose in mind - ideally you're unhappy with your current package pricing and are willing to switch to Telus. Do your research beforehand including calling Telus and asking what they offer. New customers usually get promo pricing so I assume Telus could beat Shaw's quote. Use this info when calling Shaw.

The first person you speak to when calling Shaw won't have much power and is customer service rep - tell them you'd like to cancel your services and they'll transfer you to the retention department. The customer service rep will talk to the retention department about your situation to discuss a strategy on how to keep you (they do this while you are on hold).

The retention department does the negotiating. Just explain to them that Telus is offering a better price for a similar package and that you'd like to switch. They'll put you on hold while they put something together for you. The more serious you are about switching, the better their offer will be. If their offer isn't satisfactory explain again that you'd like to cancel and switch to Telus - they'll want to know why, and you can explain that it's because their pricing is better. They'll eventually give a lower, best and final offer, which is likely the best price you'll get. It will usually be for 3-6 months in which time you'll have to call them again otherwise their pricing will go way up.

For the movie channels - have you considered using Netflix instead? I dont know what those channels cost but it may be cheaper to just get Netflix and go with the basic HD channel package.

Also - if you are going on vacation for 30 days or more consider suspending your account - that is when you keep everything but dont get any service for 30 days (or more) if you're out of town and dont need them. Great for lowering your monthly bills while on summer vacation. Shaw doesn't advertise this and it has to be 30 days minimum, and I think the charge is $10/m or something small rather than your usual monthly bill.

Finally if all that fails and you want someone to negotiate on your behalf, I saw on TV a few months ago a company called My Bills are High that does the negotiating on your behalf (for a fee).

The PS4 reads terrible numbers, I get around 50 on it and everything else gets 170 so I would not rely on those numbers.

What computer are you connecting to? I know it might seen ridiculous but there is a possibility that your computer has a card that cannot accept anything above 100.

The speedtest app on the phone is also unreliable, I average anywhere from 25 to 170. What Phone are you using.

As mentioned before is there any other networking items within the house?

So I called Telus to cancel and their answer was basically "Okay". Didn't ask why, just asked when.

So hello there Shaw.

Edit: I've also now effectively became a cord cutter too. I've been talked into Netflix.
