I will be shocked if Colborne isn't resigned soon. Letting a 20 goal 44pt center of Colborne's size and age walk doesn't make good hockey sense.
Even though Colborne doesn't play very physical there is more upside to keeping him.
They must be working on a new contract.

I actually think he will re-sign, for around 2.5. Not sure of the term, 2-3 years maybe.

It's a lOT easier to risk losing a player after a bad season than it is after a successful season. If Tre let Bouma go after last season and the team missed the playoffs, people would say he let the heart and soul of the team go and he would get al the blame. In this case, Colborne had a career year but the team still missed the playoffs. It's a lot easier sell to let Colborne go.

I'll give Bouma a year where he's hopefully not injured all the time before calling his contract bad. That's the kicker though, he seems to get injured more and more.

I think they are close. Treliving will never say anything to the media, but between Colborne being optimistic about a contract a little while ago and Treliving saying he has had good talks with Colborne I think they are pretty close.

Probably isn't worth the $1M QO but I'm sure we see him resign for $700k-800k or something.

Sure he could, but so could many others. Jooris is not an integral player or an irreplaceable player on this team. We really don't need him.

The likes Kulak, Culkin, Ferland, Chiasson better take a big step and show they belong or else next year they'll be in this unqualified group. Really sends a message.
|
I will put money on them qualifying Ferland next year. (Assuming he is RFA next year, can't remember)

I have to say, this might be Trevy's biggest mess up. We don't have a top 6 RW lined up and he lets Colborne walk, yet he qualifies Freddy Hamilton and Wotherspoon?
Plus the Heat will be terrible next seaon. Who are they going to put on the ice?

Maybe we do? UFA courting period, they could have one lined up.
There's definitely a plan, I just hope it's a good one

The decisions to qualify Wotherspoon and Hamilton are completely irrelevant to the decision not to qualify Colborne.

Colborne isn't gone yet, and I think people need to understand Treliving isn't going for broke this year. He's more than willing to weaken the roster this year if Colborne isn't affordable to not be strapped with a bad contract in the years after.
That's the right call with a team this young.

It's not a plan to bank on what ifs. RFAs are cost controlled.
Joe Colborne put up 2nd line production last season and would at least get his qualifying offer in free agency. At least trade these guys for picks!

Treliving specifically mentioned the plan is to negotiate a new contract with Colborne and that they've already had good talks. I think avoiding arbitration was key and worth the small risk that Colborne chooses to leave.
Joe is a Calgary kid through and through, probably worth the gamble that he'll stay loyal now.

I think they agree to a one year deal to give Colborne a chance to prove his end of season wasn't a fluke. If he performs, he gets a long term contract...

Weakening the roster is unacceptable. Why have one year of Elliot if the plan was to tank again? The right call is to retain your best players in a competitive market

This is far from his "biggest mess up". If Colborne signs with another team in July and goes on to have a career year, then we'll talk about it being his biggest mistake. But right now, I like it.
