Nothing wrong with this trade. The Flames are trying to balance their talent pool, they're too natural center heavy, so they traded for a guy that's played both wings.
Hunter looks like he's trending up Granlund really looked like he was starting to stagnate here.
Plus the Flames get a player who's waiver eligible for longer.
I'm not blown away by Shinkaruk by any stretch, but this is a dice role trade, gambling from a position of strength to address a real weakness on this team.

Thanks for those.
Dude has an odd stride and shot in some of those. I don't know if it's genius edges and release or just horrible, but on occasion he looks sorta stiff legged and shoots like he's playing road hockey.
Benning says Weisbrod knows the "character" of Baertschi and Granlund. Says he "relied on" him to supply info on Granlund's "intangibles."
Oh, Jesus.

If I hadn't watched Benning GM the Canucks for the last couple seasons I wouldn't get it from a Canuck perspective, but I have watched, so I do get it.
They are trying to fast track a rebuild by acquiring Baertschi/Etem/Granlund type players. I don't think it's going to work, and eventually they will have to blow it right up.
I wish I could wish Granlund all the best, but I really can't now that he's a dirty disgusting Canuck, so that sucks, but that's the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.
Hopefully Shrinky develops into a star for the Flames.

If Shinkaruk reaches his ceiling, he’ll develop into a Jeff Skinner type – undersized winger with superior edge control and offensive instincts.
Despite that potential, Shinkaruk hasn’t convinced some scouts he will be an impact point-getter in the NHL. “I see a kid with skill and quickness – the puck doesn’t slow him down – and I have no issues with his compete level, but he needs to add strength and win battles,” a scout said. “He can be pushed off pucks with ease and also has trouble getting inside. I see more of a future third-line guy than a top-six. Don’t think he has the elite skill to beat guys at the next level, so he is going to have to get stronger and use his speed to be a good two-way player.”
Shinkaruk’s elite skating ability and willingness to defend will eventually lead to a spot in the NHL. If he doesn’t develop as the Canucks hope, he’ll still be a useful third-liner who can score 30-plus points and forecheck with vigor.
