I don't know why, but I feel more positive about this one then TFA. Just looking at the story itself, we've all wanted to see what happened between the fall of the republic and the Jedi and the rise of the empire.

We've gotten some really good bits in Rebels. But this one should be a lot darker and end with a even greater feeling of utter hopelessness.

Spoiler!

Capn I had pretty much the exact same thought when I watched the trailer this morning...except I didn't know the name of the ship.

Maybe Galen Erso will be Snoke and then Rey is his grand-daughter.

The whole creation of a bigger more dangerous Death Star would make sense, as well as the line about "watching the empire rise and fall"

This trailer punctuates how terrible The Force Awakens was.

Anyone know when tickets are on sale?

TFA had a Dec 18 release and tickets went on sale Oct 19.

With R1 coming Dec 16, I would assume tickets will be on sale any day.

With Rebels we've seen that they've stumbled upon hints of the Death Star. the mining operations on Lothal. the abandoned factory bases. The extermination of the Geonosians (sp?)

I would expect of hope later on in the season that we'll get a link directly to Rogue one.

I'd love to see the crew of the Ghost stumbling across the Death Star and nearly dying to get that information back to the Rebellion.

It would also allow them to bring Vader and Tarkin back into the mix.

I get the sense that we watch the franchise for very different reasons.

Maybe I'm remembering things wrong, but don't they explicitly state some of what happened to the people who got the plans in "A New Hope".

In Return of the Jedi, when Mon Mothma is briefing Rebellion leadership on the plans for the Second Death Star, she starts by saying, "Many Bothans died to bring us this information."

The particular episode is recounted in the novel, "Shadows of the Empire."

You kind of get a hint in the opening crawl for ANH

Quote:
"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire.
During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy...."
this really links to the star fighter battle clip in the trailer, and the troops on the ground.

The way that I see it the Empire was at its height of power in Empire Strikes back, not a New Hope.

The Death Star was designed to fill in the gaps of the Empire maintaining power. They probably didn't have faith in the Imperial Navy to track down and destroy the Rebels. Instead they'd use the Death Star as a overt threat that if you support the Rebellion in any way we kill your planet.

sadly a lot of the work that talks about the time between Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars is non canon. But basically in those years, its one brutal a$$kicking after another for the rebels. They're not even a true rebel alliance.

Even after that first win which was minor and the Death Star plans were stolen, the Rebellion didn't really have much time to celebrate. If you played the game Tie Fighter. the Empire put up a blockade around Yavin and waited for Vader's Super Star Destroyer to get finished. At which point the Rebellion was nearly destroyed. Even in Empire Strikes back that whole movie was one monumental victory after the other as the rebellion was pretty much beaten down and chased through the Galaxy.

To me for anything to make sense, the first victory of the rebellion really has to come with a massive and devastating price and sacrifice. At the end of the movie. The Empire has an ultimate terror weapon and are very much prepared to use it. They'll still have an overwhelming army and navy. The rebel spies have to make a heroic sacrifice. This will look stupid if all of the rebels survive and go to a space Sharma restaurant.
