I'm ok with the lineup going to Edmonton. A bunch of two-way players that can skate and be a bunch of pests. More ideal to piss someone like McDavid off, who'd probably just dance past the likes of Kanzig and Smith.

Realistically, they probably just wouldn't play McDavid if the Flames did this. What would be the point other than letting the home fans see him? I doubt he needs any further evaluation for them to know he'll be on the team.

I imagine the road team has to submit a roster first for split squad games, same as starting lineups, can anyone confirm?

Yep... I don't think its in anyones interest to appear to be targeting certain players ... What goes comes around as they say... I like it when the teams play a clean respectful brand of hockey...

Smid and Byron are skating by themselves today and are looking good. Neither are cleared for contact so they have to practice separately.

That's very intriguing. Ferland's a strong skater and woudl add an element to that line that completely changes its dynamic. But what does it do to it offensively? Can they still be a scoring machine?

Johnny could easily make any linemate look good. Ferland is decent with the puck, and could likely learn where to be in order to score regularly. Look at the goal against van in g6 last spring.

The best thing this weekend was the willingness by every one of the Flames players to stop and give all the kids and other fans autographs and take pictures.

Don't forget Ferland had great chemistry with Stone in Junior.

I definitely see some huge upside on Nakladal (sp?) He's stood out to me both Saturday and Sunday as far as skating and the first pass out of the zone look, the other dark horse defenseman I can see making a case is Wilson while not flashy hes heavy on the man and not afraid to through out that big open ice hit like someone else pointed out.

I can see the flames having quite the log jam @ the defense position the next few years with how much talent we have coming up.

One thing to note, after the 2nd practice the flames staff got up to leave and obviously caught me glancing at the lineup sheet as one of them asked "How do those lines look for tomorrow?" as he walked by, I had a good laugh and he was all smiles.

Aaron Johnson was signed to an AHL contract. Per Steinberg.

I would not be surprised knowing that Johnson got a contract that Wilson gets one too, but an NHL one instead. Wilson played the best of the PTO guys this weekend.

With Smid likely out till the end of October (give or take) having Wilson would help mitigate that loss in the lineup.

We do have spots in Adirondack as well, so we could say send Kanzig to the ECHL and have him playing heavy minutes there. I do think they'll keep him in town and return him to the Hitmen for an overage year. Easier to work with him on his game than if he's across the country.

Haven't the Flames AHL affiliate carried 8+ defensemen much of the last few years due to the number of back to backs and injuries/call-ups?

Coming out of summer it was mostly expected the Flames defensemen would be Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton, Wideman, Russell, Engelland and Smid. Well Smid is out for a while still so that opens up an NHL job for someone to move up from the AHL.

Leaving Wotherspoon, Nakladal, Morrison, Culkin, Kulak, Sieloff, Stevenson, Kanzig, Kylington and players on PTOs (Johnson, Murray, Wilson) fighting for AHL jobs. Culkin is out for a while, which opens up a 2nd AHL job to start the season. Johnson obviously fills one of those. With Pilon quitting hockey it means Kylington is pretty much guaranteed to get price playing time in Brandon so IMO sending him there is a now brainer.

That leaves what 10 guys (including PTOs) for 1 NHL job and probably 8 AHL jobs. Unless both Wilson and Murray are signed everyone signed to an NHL or AHL contract will have a place.

Here's my short summary of each player from group A and group B through the weekend. I'll post the third one later tonight or tomorrow morning.
