Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
My understanding is it's a 2015 second round pick coming back from Vancouver for Baertschi. #Flames

I have no problem with trading him for a 2nd, it seems obvious he wanted out of the Flames organization. To trade him to a huge division rival is just plain stupid though. His motivation will be huge to stick it to the Flames and he has the talent to do it. This will bite us in the ass, watch.

Shows it as a 2015 - 2nd round pick.

some of us are lol, they probably noticed his 8 goals in the AHL and pouting all year. Add to the fact Sven wanted out and was an upcoming RFA

In isolation, the trade today is fine. For what Baertchi has become (basically a project prospect that will be waiver eligible next season), a mid 2nd round pick is fine value in a trade.

But overall, it is a failure of course. When a top 15 first rounder flops to this level, it is a failure. Every team has them and I think he was worth the risk at the time, but it still sucks when it happens.

The Canuck factor sucks though, in the event the trade backfires. Please don't let this be Treliving's "Martin St. Louis". I think the chances are low, but the thought scares the crap out of me.

Canuck fans on Reddit are doing backflips in joy.

As far as the picks go, the year doesn't matter much. If it is 2015, it's another asset now. If it is 2017, it could be a better pick as the Canucks are still trending down.

Well, if he asked to be moved, good on the Flames for accommodating that request.

At this stage, he is the epitome of 'boom or bust' pick. Surprised Treliving was willing to trade him to a rival - not only a divisional rival, but definitely a bona fide hated rival. Treliving probably not only sought the best return, but was comfortable enough to think that this will not come back to bite him in the butt.

Nope, I told Vox that was pretty funny when he was rebooting the server for us.

I think the trade is fine, I think they had enough prospects passing him, I think for whatever reason Sven doesn't want to be here anyway, the waiver stuff is a big factor.

Even if it was mishandling by the team (which I don't think is necessarily the case), I'd rather admit the mistake and move forward.

It does hurt that it's Vancouver.

I thought Sven could of made this lineup, but apparently he wanted out and we got what I think is good value for him. Just wish it wasn't Vancouver, cause now I have to cheer against his development, but at the en dof the day, if its a 2015 2nd rounder, there are lots of interesting things we could do at the draft.

Pros to the Deal

1) Kid Wanted out
2) Diminishing Value on an asset (waiver eligibility, stalled development)
3) Fresh start for Bartschi
4) Now have 5 picks in rounds 2 and 3 to try and move up and/or improve organizational depth
5) Canucks have no 2nd or 3rd round picks in 2015
6) Best deal we could get.

Cons :
1) Deal with the Canucks

The fans who are disappointed are the one's who think he is a 13th overall pick who scored 2ppg in the WHL. Unfortunately he's going to be a third year pro next year who can't seem to produce in the NHL or AHL and has to clear through waivers next year basically guaranteeing you lose him for nothing or just keep him on the roster effectively hurting the team. Honestly a 2nd round pick is pretty good value. It sucks that it's the Canucks but that was probably the only team willing to offer that value. There is a chance he finds his game in Vancouver but there is also a chance he doesn't and Van either wasted a 2nd round pick on him or wastes a roster spot on him. It's a bit of a gamble but I think the odds are with us on this one.

Seems like Sven keeps looking for an easier route instead of doing the long hard work it takes for all players to make the show.

If Van were offering the highest value return and the drop off to the next bidder was significant then I guess it was (begrudgingly) the best move..

The correlation is that if Sven wasn't going to make the team, he would have either been lost for nothing or traded for a 4th like Colborne. A 2nd > 4th.

Outside of his 8 minutes with Bollig "opportunity" this season he was a 21 yr old that scored at a 0.5 point per game pace in the NHL through his first 60 odd games. Find me a long list of young guys with a better resume than that that aren't a regular on an NHL roster. His body of work was/is just fine.

And I'm happy it's the Canucks - because when he is claimed (or not) on waivers next season (or traded for 4th round pick), Flames are the clear winners.

This thread is a great example of how badly fans overrate their own team's prospects. I think if you were to poll the league about Baertschi you would get some extremely cooled responses. His stock has fallen since draft day, which is ironic considering the huge spike upward he took the first year after the draft. It's not just his numbers either, it's his stagnation in his development in so many areas of the game that are crucial to be a good NHLer.

I'm not happy about the return, but it's mostly because Baertschi has ruined his own trade value. For a player that was going to have to clear waivers next camp and be lost for nothing, this is excellent asset management.

Not writing Sven off completely, but nothing he's done at the pro level makes me think he'll be anything more than a below average scoring winger in the NHL.
