McIlroy and Spieth are the two mega talents in golf right now. Everyone else is looking up at them. That will be the rivalry in the coming years. No offense to Fowler and Dustin but Martin Kaymer has two majors and they have zero. Not sure you can call them rivalry worthy with Spieth and McIlroy. Day might have a claim but I think he's still quite a bit behind Rory and Jordan.

Bubba Watson.
For as many who cheer for the huge drives, creativity, and "self taught" good ol' boy; there are as many or more who sound like they are getting tired of his petulance, how when things start to go wrong he can really go off the rails on people, and his whining about crowds in Europe didn't win him many friends.
That is about as big a foil as I can come up with off the top of my head.

And yet this describes Tiger Woods perfectly as well except for the things going wrong part. Tiger was definitely always petulant, swearing like mad, and whining about the crowds (and letting Steve Williams do whatever).
I don't get what made Tiger so popular other than winning. He was pretty much a clear jerkoff before the cheating scandal broke.

Golf doesn't need a villain, it needs competition.
With the original big 3 - Arnie, Jack and Gary Player - there was no villain, only great golf and a heightened level of competition.
People who watch golf want to see greatness, not good vs evil

Agreed, Tiger was worse than Bubba in terms of poor etiquette. I really enjoyed cheering against him.

Jack was clearly the villain to Arnold.
I didn't include Bubba or Rose because they are already mid-30s. Kaymer was one I missed.
I wish it was Ian Poulter at the top, that would be entertainment. Maybe McIlroy needs to trash-talk at the next Ryder Cup.

Jack was not a villain.
He didn't have Arnie's charisma, but he was still a good, clean, all-American kid with a respect for the game.

Out of nowhere, Tiger is 6 under through 15 at the Wyndham Championship. I guess he really wants to be in the playoffs next week. Don't know the math, but I think he needs to win this week to qualify? Don't think just a high finish will cut it.

He has to finish in 2nd on his own or win to get into the playoffs

And then he's gonna have to put together some top level finishes to keep advancing through the playoffs.

I hope he wins and then runs the table in the playoffs.
Extremely unlikely, I know. But would be awesome to see.

His post PGA interview was very upbeat, came across as someone that had identified his problems, was optimistic that he was turning a corner and felt that he was very close to a solution as opposed to someone in despair. I got the impression that the self belief is still there.

Hate him all you want but golf is more interesting to watch when Tiger is in the hunt.

Tiger playing well today, just not sinking those mid range birdie putts.

Tiger implodes with a triple on the back nine. Looks like DL3 might pull it out which would be nice.
No way I'm tuning into that tournament except that Tiger was near the lead for a while. Maybe he is able to be competitive next year?

He was competitive this year. He had a tough hole on 11, otherwise he makes the playoffs.
You left out the part where he birdied 4 of his last 6 holes.
