Apple fanboys talk about Apple.
Android fanboys talk about Apple.
Android fanboys talk about Android.
Apple fanboys talk about... well, usually Apple, because most of them have no idea what the latest/'coolest' non-Apple phone is.
It shows you the power of the Apple brand. Companies STILL make commercials that aren't about "being good" but about "being better than Apple." Android fanboys can't resist the urge to join in on conversations about Apple, "Us too! Pay attention to our stuff!"
I've never met an Apple fanboy who cares what Google or Microsoft are doing, but I sure do meet a bunch of Android/Windows fanboys who care an awful lot about what Apple is doing.

Doesn't that just mean that Apple fanboys are blind to everyone else while Android/Microsoft/etc fans are willing to compare?

There really isn't a lot left out there to pioneer. There's a cap in size before the big phones turn into glorified tablets so it's going to boil down to quality and execution which just happens to be Apple's forte. If you are looking at phone A and phone B do you really care which phone did what first? Most people only care about which phone today is the best.
Those Samsung ads over the weekend were embarrassingly, cringe worthy. At least Apple attached humour to their "I am a Mac" campaign years back while the Samsung ads looked like PC attack ads devoid of humour or tact. Just another reason why Apple is so successful as even their attack ads are more polished.

I generally care about what Apple is doing because a) I closely follow the tech industry in general and b) I own several Apple products and have been buying Apple products for years, just not iPhones... because if it's one device I need to be extremely competent, it's my phone.

I follow what Apple does because I follow what pretty much any tech company does. I've owned their products in the past (no one made a better MP3 player than the iPod) so I'm interested to see what they do. I consider myself fairly brand agnostic (Android phone, Windows tablet, Xbox 360, PS4), whatever seems to be the best option at the moment is what I buy. Hell of the 4 Android phones I've owned they've all been from different manufacturers (HTC, Samsung, LG, OnePlus)
To me the guys that only follow Apple and never even look at companies aren't doing themselves any favors. Anyone who buys the new iPhone 6+ and likes it has companies like Google and Samsung to thank, because they've taken so much market share away from Apple it's forced them to change their product offerings to compete

It's not that at all, but you would think so, right?
A/W fanboys (not to be confused with A&W fanboys) aren't just "willing to compare", they have a dire need to in any way that may cast negative light on Apple. It's like a cry for help.
Just look at this thread, which is sparsely littered with comments from one or two A/W fanboys about the feature(s) that are better on a Nexus or Galaxy, or how Apple isn't as good as ______. Now, go into the Android thread. How many Apple fanboys do you see trotting around slagging Android phones over the last 5-10 pages? The OnePlus thread? The Nexus thread?
It's really just humorous to me. It comes off as desperate. I know a guy on Facebook who never talks about his phone. He has a Samsung I believe. So when does he make mention of anything to do with phones? Right, when it's slagging Apple. The "Nexus 2012" image tickled him pink... and he doesn't even own a Nexus either. Seems weird to keep talking about a phone you don't own and don't want to own, doesn't it? It's fine to want to say "My thing is better," so it's even weirder when you get joy from Apple being negatively compared to a different phone... which you don't own... isn't it?
Android fanboys (and I do mean fanboys, not the average user) are strangely obsessed with what they perceive Apple does wrong. It's funny to watch.

An article about the Apple Watch and why it won't be understood by the tech industry. I thought it was really interesting, worth the read.
http://daringfireball.net/2014/09/apple_watch
If those are the kinds of prices that the high end watches are going to be, I think he's totally right and the tech blogosphere is going to flip out. But it makes sense.

Isn't "Android Fanboy" one of the most misleading titles ever? Android is an OS, but you can get it on literally hundreds of different devices. So for instance you can like HTC phones and hate Samsung, but you can get Android on either. So being an "Android fanboy" seems patently absurd when you can dislike devices than run Android. You can be a "Samsung Fanboy" or a "HTC fanboy", but an actual Android fanboy is a bit much, particularly since Android can be uniquely manipulated by users if they so desire (making it more open obviously). So not every Android device is even the same, unlike Apple.
Being an "Apple Fanboy" can wholly apply because there is literally only 1 product that can run Apple. I think people mostly mock Apple Fanboys because they are the equivalent to US Republicans, they live in an Apple bubble where other quality products are dismissed as subpar entirely because they don't have the words "Apple" attached. It's like if you did the Pepsi Taste challenge: if you erased every Apple Fanboys memory, gave them the new iPhone 6 or the Galaxy S5, it would be close to an even split (because really, is there that much different in the phones? Certainly not enough for 100% to choose one over the other). But without erasing their memories it'd be 100% Apple because....because why? It's bizarre mostly. I know the ecosystem entrapment has a lot to do with people refusing to leave Apple though. Making switching costs high is one of Apple's smarter moves.

In a society that pays dollars and time to religiously follow their favourite sports teams and to hack on other people's sports teams, are you really suprised the same kind of behaviour/passion exists in the tech world?
We're a highly tech focused society where we live every day with several different types of technology. The fact that there's people who love getting wrapped up in what companies are doing and how they're better than others is not odd to me at all. And I don't find it desperate/sad/etc.
FYI - I'm an iPhone user, have an iPad, run Windows 8.1 on my PCs and laptop, use VMWare and Hyper-V, and am very much waiting for the Surface 4.

I disagree with this. Lots of Apple users realize that the competition is putting out solid products and even if they didn't pay attention to the tech every android fanboy never lets your forget about their HD screens, camera resolution, etc. Seriously it's hard to talk any Apple or phones without some annoying fanboy calling you a sheep or telling what brand X has done better for years.
For most Apple users it all comes down to sticking with what you like and what's been solid and reliable for you. People still by the Honda Civic in droves even though the competition has closed the gap and in a lot of cases surpassed the Civic in a lot of areas. People don't seem to care as their last Civic was reliable and trustworthy and regardless of the great reviews of other cars they continue to buy Civics and it remains the top selling car in Canada and top selling compact in the US.
For a person like me that's had very good luck with Apple products and loves their OS what would I gain purchasing a Galaxy S5 over an iphone 6? Go to a new operating system that I may like better or may not. Go to hardware that may be less reliable. Lose compatibility with other devices in my household. Just not worth it to me and at the end of the day it's just a phone and the little things like pixel density simply don't matter to most people.

The myth that megapixels actually matter past a certain point is the Keyser Söze of the photography world. Higher MP on a camera phone do far more harm than good imo. We're getting to a place where the computers that handle the images are far more important.
It's iOS 8 day. Can we keep the circular fanboy arguments from escalating any further? It's is like an Atheist ruining Christmas.
