Needed to overpay to hit the cap floor.. Only wish it was for a different type of defenseman. But I guess I can live with a big hitting defenseman. Also the term needed to be 1-2 years, 3 is pushing it.

Butler was the weakest on the ice, he had never even been in an NHL fight.
Sorry, correction, weakest on the Flames.

If that is the case then I guess Brodie is screwed as Gio, Wideman, Smid also all be playing 2nd pairing minutes to justify their deals and Russell at 2.6 must be pretty close to having to play those minutes to justify his deal as well.

Overpayment? Sure...by a bit. Its UFA day, everyone gets more than they would if they werent a free agent.
The Flames needed to get tougher on the blueline in order to protect their G's, this guy without question fills that need. He also can play F in a pinch which never hurts for a guy to be versatile. Also he is a RH shot which was despeately needed.
Its a short term so no, it does nothing to hurt the club in the future. Still have 18 million dollars to play with if needed.
Its all good.

What have I done wrong?
Said I don't like this signing? Take criticism from the usual suspects? Get called a crying, over-reacting baby?
I'm the one who has to worry about the ban hammer?

Most posters in this thread thought this was a terrible contract before I even posted. Once I did, the wolves were on me like clockwork.

Don't try to play the victim here, you did the same thing during the draft. Something you don't agree with happens and instead of just saying your piece you make 10 posts a minute and fly off the handle. Just relax.

I know that there is a large ego surrounding the city of Calgary, but let us face facts here. This isn't a desireable location in the hockey sense if you want to win, the team is in rebuild mode and will be for at least 2 more years. So right away the Flames have to over pay. After that, they are in the middle of the pack for desireable cities in Canada. Above Edmonton/Winnipeg, on par with Ottawa, but below Toronto/Montreal/Vancouver.
So you have a team that isn't winning and that most people don't want to live in.. that means you have to over pay. Let's just be glad it isn't a longer term than it is..

For a team that had Sarich making 3.6 and then 3.0 to be a 6/7 guy when the cap was much lower this doesn't look too crazy to me. Certainly won't cripple us at any point IMO. Hopefully he skates better than Smid and Sarich, I haven't watched him too closely.

Treliving just said he thinks Engelland has been under appreciated and that he's a good character guy.

Sarich was a way better player.

I disagreed with a move made during the draft for a player I don't believe is good. Yes.
People jumped on me.
I disagreed with a move made on July 1.
People jumped on me.
Have I broken a law? Gone against the terms of the forum? Who really is the one overreacting?

I'm done. Not a good deal, but excited for the team to start camp and seeing what he brings. Hope he's a leader who gets in scrums at will.

As an natural optimist it is in my nature to love all the moves the Flames make and have been guilty of defending way too many of the Flames moves recently but I don't think that is the case here.
It isn't top 3 worst deal of the day because it isn't enough to hurt the Flames or affect how they operate going forward. It doesn't handcuff them, it doesn't prevent them from signing/adding anyone in the future and it doesn't prevent a young guy from playing.
It is too much money yes but not so outrageous or damaging that it matters that much at all.

It's embarrassing that, if you say anything that goes against the "Flames can do no wrong" mantra that many posters on the forum have developed, these same people mock you and ask for the ban hammer.

Let it go. Nobody is picking on you but they are getting tired of you answering every post with your opinion as facts and ruining the thread. Makes it tough to read.

I agree it's not top 3 worst. After looking at the contracts, it currently sits at 4th worst IMO
I understand that it might not impact the Flames immediately, but we don't know what can happen in a year or two and I'd rather take on a bad contract via trade and get something for it rather than just sign our own bad contract.
