If it's flattering, one would think that there would be more trade proposals involving Monahan.

The more I think about it the more I feel the Flames should stand pat and take what they get at 4th. They're gonna get a great player at 4th and if they do end up trading Baertschi (I hope they don't) they could package him to get a more established player rather than trying to move up to #1.

You're being obtuse.
Baertschi is viewed the way he should be, as a potentially good but potentially expendable (because he is potentially good) prospect.
Monahan scored 20 goals.
You know all this.

Flames are in no position to have expendable players that show offensive aptitude. While it may appear there is a redundancy on left wing with Johnny and others, NONE of those guys have shown they are NHL players.
We need as many bullets as we can get, so lets not waste them needlessly.

The rights to Butler for Florida's first and second or he's a bad GM.

I don't think the Flames should barter with their 4th... I say keep the 4th, and if possible, chase that 1st overall by all realistic means possible. If it means sending over Baertschi, Glencross (pending waive of NTC), a 2nd and a 3rd, I would do it. Does Florida take this? Probably not... So add more!
The Flames seem to be poised to be a pretty good team over the next few years, and trading aging assets like Hudler, Wideman, Glencross and MAYBE even Giordano should all be looked at.
If I'm Burke/Treliving, I would also engage conversations with Tallon regarding a signing of Cammy/trade/salary retention. The Flames current cap situation should definitely add some firepower to trade talks with any team...
I'm pretty sure that with the Flames current situation and rebuild status, the brass is looking at every option to increase first round picks now and in the near future. With Florida making their first overall publicly available (allegedly), The Flames HAVE to be throwing everything they realistically can at them... While retaining our current pick, of course.

It would be great if the Flames could end up with the first and fourth picks. I don't think the panthers want picks so hopefully we have players they want

Personally this draft is nothing compared to next draft. We're going to get a good player 1 or 4th. We should keep out assets to trade at next years draft if we don't end up with a top 2 pick, our prospect's value should go up as well if everything pans out.

Yeah, thats the general theme, but that means earlier picks are going to be that much more expensive. Plus, some of our assets will become free agents and after another year of rebuild, their value will possibly drop a bit after another season of losing.
Imagine if we could scoop Ekblad and Bennet this year? Plus pick reasonably next? I think this is what we should be aiming for, while still providing us fans with good, skilled, competitive, hardworking hockey whilst this all plays out.

How long before Ekblad makes impact at NHL level?
I'm thinking:
1 year of junior
1 year of Ahl
2nd year of Nhl

honestly Tallon is just doing his job seeing what he can get because they probably also think the top 4 or so are rated pretty even. If you don't ask or see what people are willing to give up then you aren't doing your job. Might as well put it out there and see if some offers something ridiculous. I bet the main reason this is out there is because the oilers were extremely vocal about their man crush on ekblad. Almost painting Mactavish into a corner daring him to make that big bold move.

I would wager that he plays in the NHL next season, but probably won't be an impact player right away.

Well, he is a level below S.Jones and probably a little better than Nurse.
Treliving doesn't like to rush players and Ekblad is a dman and they take longer. Best place for Ekblad would be AHL but he cannot go there.

Seems pretty pessimistic on your part. Ekblad as an exceptional player in the OHL has already played 3 seasons of junior. It'd be pretty shocking if he didn't go straight to the NHL. He may not be a top 4 guy in his first year but he should make an impact considerably quicker than you're suggesting.

There's a difference between rushing players and holding them back. Ekblad after 3 years of junior doesn't have much to prove at that level. He may be eased into the NHL but the timeline you're suggesting is borderline ludicrous for a prospect of his calibre and physical maturity.

Hec, if the oilers draft Ekblad, he wouldn't only play next year, he'd have a letter on his jersey and probably be on the cover of their recruiting DVD.

He can't go there the season after either, which is what you're suggesting.

I think I'm the only one on here not high on Ekblad, watching all highlight packs and a few games this year he has lack luster speed, more of a coaster player (just has good positioning - goes to the right areas) but honestly I don't think he is that dynamic nor worth trading up for

He'd instantly become the flames best defensive prospect. If the panthers asked for Brodie in the deal, I wouldn't be against it because we have a player like Russell who can somewhat replace him for the time being and I think Ekblad has a higher ceiling than Brodie does. Something like the 4th + Brodie for the panthers first and something else might work but
