It might be. But I never want to see 7 straight losses at home with (was it really) 5 (cause it felt like more) shutouts at home, again in my lifetime.
That was soooooo painful. For all of us I'm sure!

Either a) we'll finish last, but lose the lottery, or
b) the NHL changes the rules for the lottery, and somehow that ends up screwing us.
It's just how things go with the Flames. I don't see why they'll change and let us have McDavid.

McDavid would be awesome to get, but yes, the Flames don't have this type of fortune. However, everything I hear about Eichel makes him seem like quite the consolation prize.

I feel as though no team is really tearing it apart this year, so McDavid will come down to one of Calgary, Florida, Buffalo, or Edmonton. 25% chance we get McDavid.
I have trouble seeing Edmonton not pursuing new coaching, goaltending, defense in the off season...so maybe it's closer to 1 in 3.

How about the team in the most financial trouble winning the McDavid lottery.

Yeah wouldn't be all that surprised if the Devils or the Preds are there next season as well. The Preds might not be in terrible shape financially, but they don't really have a franchise scorer capable of selling tickets.
I don't think the Oilers will be there, can management afford another last place result? It just can't happen again, can it?
Calgary, Florida, Buffalo, Nashville, and New Jersey are the five destined for the lottery next season. The Islanders and Hurricanes also have a shot as well if certain things happen (Islanders don't get a goalie or Carolina trades Ward). How about McDavid going to New York to help the Islanders build their fanbase once they move to Brooklyn? If it were all a conspiracy I could see that happening.
I just hope Burke doesn't botch it and sign UFA's that will help us out "too much" next year. Not like we want to cheer for losses, but I think we're all willing to take one more year off if it means having a chance at a player of McDavid's calibre. We won't really need to tank again if enough progress occurs in the next couple years.

I'll give you the Toews comparison, although I wouldn't say it's ludicrous to compare the two. Yes Toews is a better player, but IN THAT ROLE, they are very comparable. IE, if you're looking for a top line, defensevly reliable center that can get you points and be clutch, my list goes Crosby, Toews, Bergeron. But I would agree that the one franchise player on the Bruins would be Chara. Dude is a monster.
My definition of a franchise center is a top-line center that you can build a championship team around. Yes, the Bruins are built around Chara moreso than any other player, but Bergeron is their championship franchise center and will be for quite a few more years.
How about...Hall of Fame Player....
|
Bergeron isn't even the centre that plays the most ice time on the Bruins (Krejci). He's a great player... but with his offense trending downward he's more of a super powered Stephaine Yelle or John Madden type guy than someone you build around.

Is he better than Saku ever was though?

That's a good question, can't really answer that. They are both great leaders and give their all every time they are on the ice, exceptional 2-way players. I'd say it's pretty even!
