Don't get me wrong, I love Rick and Morty, but part of me wishes they would flesh out a more coherent overall story arc like The Venture Bros. Could be very loose but something interesting to play with especially with all the episodes that Adult Swim has ordered. Anyways, still love the show, but think they should start taking things to another level.
They do have the "Evil Morty" arch, which I'm assuming will tie into an explanation for why Rick was missing for 20 years.
The show has been devoted 1-2 episodes per season to this.
I kind of like the way they are doing this. You get the best of both worlds. A great arch, that they slowly tease out, and not every episode is bogged down by increasingly derivative plot exposition. The main focus of the show is comedy, and the one-off episodes allow the writers to explore this. I really like the "evil Morty" episodes but they're also very heavy.
It's a similar formula to Adventure Time, which was one of my favorites too.

It just wasn't very funny. The Rick sex party and Morty awkward teenage thing has also been done multiple times.
Its not even just that its been done multiple times, this just felt like a throw-away episode to make the numbers. You could see everything that was going to happen coming from miles away.
Further, 'gross-out humour' for me has to be in relatively small doses and preferably clever, if its overdone I find it becomes excessively childish and loses all effectiveness, you just acknowledge it and move along, its not making me laugh, and thats pretty much all of what this episode had going for it.
Which is a shame because I think they could have really done a lot with the 'Captain Planet' idea.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Agreed that wasn’t the best. There was a bit of Morty and Summer character development, some 90s nostalgia and I could listen to Alison Brie read the phone book but overall not compelling or funny.

The episode was written by long-time Dan Harmon collaborator, Rob Schrab. He definitely has an odd sense of humour so it makes sense that you feel that way. I haven't watched this episode yet, but I'm a fan of Schrab so my expectations are that I'll enjoy it.
Ya I don't see what the grumbling is about. It was nice to see Summer and Rick have an adventure with Summer out ricking Rick, and the Captain Planet parody was great. It wasn't a series classic or anything, but still plenty entertaining. Some people seem to have way too many expectations for this show
I've enjoyed the episodes. I might just be easy to please though. The Muppet and skinned Smiths were disturbing, but this show also shows no restraint in running with its dark side, which i actually appreciate.
3 was better than 2. I like that Summer immediately showed respect for the Elbowtitties. Post cred was hilarious too.
