Exactly. If anything scratching a young player (1st rounder, top 5 pick, whomever) should happen more often. Something the Islanders, Carolina and Edmonton (among others) can speak to.

Somewhere along the way it became a massive issue to sit a player, any player, whom is considered a top prospect or an established NHLer. I blame TSN, twitter and the media in general for a large amount of this.

Long story short Sven hasn't played well at times so he should be sat. The goal here is to turn him into a solid professional hockey player with a long career in Calgary. The guy hasn't proved anything at the NHL level yet so I'm not sure why sitting him for not performing is an issue.

If being benched because they want to see more effort/commitment/responsibility out of him 'ruins him', then I'll see you in Europe and the Spengler cup Sven.

If all it's for is correction and learning then I'm ok with it. He should get no special treatment and has to meet expectations. However, if it's just because he's "not playing physical enough" or what have you then I have an issue with that. Sven will never be a Mike Peca or Brendan Shanahan type player. He is more of a finesse player and should be allowed to play that game IMHO. McGrattan last year said that he could go out and play his game because he was looking out for him. Baertschi should be allowed to play his game and not forced into a mold that doesn't suit him.

Do you honestly think Sven not being Mike Peca or Brenden Shanahan was the reason he was scratched? Or do you think maybe they saw a dominant performance out of him against Washington, and he hasn't brought that same intensity or execution to any game before or after?

Washington Sven is what they demand and expect. It's what we should demand and expect. So when Sven brings that every night, he's in no danger of being sat out. And that is 10000000% up to Sven. Not Hartley, not Burke, not anyone but Sven Baertschi. I'm eagerly awaiting the day he figures it out, because he's got a #1 centre to play with for the next ten years skating next to him.

Well, as I said in my previous post I hope that isn't that case, however, Burke has gone on record as saying Sven needs to be more complete in all three zones, Hartley has alluded to the same. I'm saying that Sven likely isn't the type to play all three zones effectively.

Does that mean he isn't a fit for the Flames? It's up to management but I think he still is. I don't think we need a team of players that are a jack of all trades but a master of none. I think we need a dash of offensively minded players, defensively minded players and a mix of two way players. Sven to me fits in the offensive category.

Why not? He did it just fine in junior. Other small guys like Martin St.Louis do it just fine.

I don't think they want him to be some defensive dynamo, but there is quite literally zero reason why he can't play a sound and competitive game in all 3 zones.

I don't like this "Sven likely isn't he type of player to..." stuff. He's young, lots left to learn. If he isn't doing something in particular right now then this is the perfect time to teach him.

I'm just selfish about it. Sven is fun to watch. Jackman is not.

Is there any chance they're showcasing Jackman?

Only explanation I can have to sitting Baertschi twice, but like I said in the GDT, why not sit Bouma, Hartley was benching him last game, yet he still would rather have him in the top 9 than Baertschi?

Every line needs an anchor!

Bouma = 4th line guy on 1st line
Galiardi = 4th line guy on 2nd line
Jackman = 14th forward on 3rd line
McGrattan = 13th forward on 14th line

...apparently Hartley really wants Sam Reinhart on the team next year.

Only thing was when he took that puck to the shoulder in the Chicago game, I guess it could be a bad contusion that's bothering him a bit, probably not too serious to put a player out of the line-up usually but at this time of the year you can let stuff like that completely heal?

Not sure if that was intentional, but I lol'd.

Every top-flight professional hockey player can play in all three zones if they want to. Just look at the Olympics, where teams full of small, skilled European players shut down high-powered teams like Canada and Russia with strong positional play and relentless checking.
