This incident proves again that sports reporting is an oxymoron.
A guy gets roasted for accurately quoting a hockey player making an off-colour comment. Good grief.

I think it's ironic that everybody is roasting the reporter for reporting it, but it is all of them that are bringing attention to Thornton for it. If they really had any interest in protecting the honour of the OTR comment, they would have let it die a quick death, but instead are using this as an opportunity to report on the story while not being "that guy".
Also, I hate the comment. I am very proud that the NHL has a good reputation for having some very well-spoken athletes, compared to other professional sports. Stuff like this makes the NHL come across as bush league and full of degenerates.

Relax, everyone knows this kind of stuff gets said in every professional sports locker room, this doesn't do anything to make hockey look bush league or full of degenerates.
Also, that's kind of a silly comment about the reporters not caring about the code because they were discussing this quote. They care about the code, that's why they're all ripping Botchford for this. The quote is already out there.

From my POV, I think they're taking advantage of somebody already having broke the story, so to speak, and using this "breaking code of the locker room" as justification for reporting on the crass comments further. If they cared about Thornton, they could have easily dismissed it off the bat and claimed Thornton didn't say that. But now they (the other new sources) get the benefit of the page hits without being considered the arsewipes that originally reported on it. It's a bit if a double-standard, if you ask me.
And personally, I am glad that dbags like Sean Avery and his idiotic comments have been purged from the NHL. But I wonder if Sean Avery had said something like that in the locker room would reporters be similarly incensed about it being reported? Or is it just because Joe Thornton is a respected player?

Seriously, what do you think these guys normally talk about in locker room? Bible camp? Pottery? Lace Doilies?
Any male dominated work force, even highly professional ones, are rife with dick, butt, fart and masturbation jokes. All of which are incredibly funny.

I've heard some pretty terrible jokes on all of the aforementioned topics.
