I think we can all agree that it would be nice to showcase Monahan on the world stage and brag about him. But the only thing that makes is he stays where he is. He's a pro now. But if we're a bottom 5 team at that time, it probably wouldn't hurt to send him.

Would you send him to the WJC since he has his whole career to play NHL games?

The way I see it, if we cant handle losing a player for stretches of time, our team wont be able to handle the injuries that occur in the playoffs

Great idea. I think we should sit Backlund, Stempniak and Giordano against the devils. Just in case we get hit with the injury bug one day.
Cause if our team can't handle stretches of injuries to key players, they won't be able to handle injuries in the playoffs
Fantastic logic. Why didn't any coach in the NHL think of this before.
Coaches are so stupid for trying to ice the best lineup night after night.

Yea, I guess our team with many seasoned pros can't even scrap a few wins for a week without 19 year old Monahan to save their a55es. Hopefully he never suffers an injury ever in his career, our team will be like a bunch of lost puppies. Oh Noes!

No way. Just because Europeans make a bigger deal of the World Championship doesn't mean they're comparable.
Olympic gold and Stanley Cup are debatable, but Stanley Cup beats out a World Championship 99 times out of 100.
(I would guess that there are certain situations where the WC is a really special deal. Stuff like Slovakia winning their first championship against Russia after recently becoming they're own country, I'm guessing that's pretty special. But not really a lot of situations like that.)

I have nothing to really add, except that I hope he doesn't get sent down. The line with him, Lee and Sven is magical.
Magical!

Can't describe how great it is to see Monahan and baertschi clicking on a line... to think its just the beginning. By 2015 our top line could be:
Baertschi-Monahan-Poirier

moon is talking sense here.
I would add that the team's results should factor into whether he goes to the World Juniors or not. If Monahan sticks with the Flames after his 9 games but by December the bubble has burst for the Flames and we're in full-on suck mode then the WJCs would be a nice change of pace for him. As in, if the team starts struggling soon and continue struggling until then, the atmosphere in the dressing room starts to suck and he could benefit from a brief change of scenery.

I'd rather be able to brag about having a Calder candidate.

So its okay for a Junior team or College team to lose their #1 player and probably team leader for a couple of weeks but its not ok for an NHL team which probably doesn't have a hope in hell of making the playoffs?
Selfish.

Point is if an 18 year old is playing meaningful minutes for his NHL team, it would be beyond stupid to take him out of your lineup.
|
All of those guys played in the WJC before entering the NHL, so the argument about having the experience of it doesn't apply at all. Seguin should have been lent, he spent half of his first year with the B's in the pressbox anyways. RNH shouldn't have even been in the NHL his first year so ya he should have went.

You're really reaching here. Selfish?!?!
Just admit the reason why you want to see Monahan leave the Flames to go play in the World Juniors is because... you want to see Monahan play in the World Juniors. This is what it all boils down to. I'd respect that a lot more then the excuses you're pulling out of thin air to do so.

Yes I would like to see him play for many reasons.
#1 would be that it will a once in a lifetime experience that he'll remember forever.
#2 would be that he can only benefit from the experience.
#3 would be that if he benefits the Flames benefit.
20 years down the road the 4 or 5 Flames games that he misses won't mean squat but all the WJC games he plays (and the medal he wins) will probably be cherished memories.

Couldn't you argue that by keeping him up it is a money decision? It increases jersey sales, ticket sales, better chance at playoffs etc.

Well this is it then, you seem to be coming at it from an emotional point of view more then anything. If you think all that, that's fine. I'm coming at it from a development point of view. I think there are certainly benefits to playing in the World Juniors but not from a guy who is already playing in the NHL. I see no need for an NHL player to be released, go down a step in competition, just so we can have a beautiful moment.
A medal isn't guaranteed by the way, Canada hasn't won Gold in four years (the only medal that matters) and wasn't on the podium at all last year. What if Sean goes down and is, oh my, emotionally crushed by the experience, oh dear, all those cherished memories are now for nothing.

Edit: I wish someone would ask TJ Brodie about his experience at the WJC and the gold medal he won. I bet its something he remembers fondly and is probably the highlight of his hockey career so far.
|
TJ Brodie would probably ask you what the hell you're talking about and reply that he never played in the World Juniors so it didn't have an impact on what a good NHL player he's turned out to be.

I got TJ confused with Greg Nemiz...
And I disagree with your position developmentally wise. I think it will be a terrific learning experience. The kids only 18 for gods sake. Any experience like this will contribute towards his development.
