Sorry, something about Toronto getting a first overall made me die a little inside. It would not matter who they pick, but all the media coverage and hype that would come with it. You weren't the only one just the first one.
I am a looooong time lurker, I've flirted with the idea of making a Dislike account for a while, it was meant for users like Jobhopper. I haven't "thanked" too many posts...yet.
Now I must return to the shadows *Woosh*

People quit jobs all the time and change careers. Maybe lost his passion for the game and got it back. Good for him to try it out again. Hockey players are employees just like all of us.

I was going to mention this earlier... But Ryan Howse is exactly why I have a problem with Sam Bennett not being able to do a pull up. Growing up in PG I would have given anything to be in Ryan's position. I could never understand how someone could come to an NHL training camp lacking the one thing that arguably everyone has control over- your fitness.
I'm glad to see he is going to make a second chance of this, and I hope he has realized what he needs to do. Can't live on Pizza and play in the NHL

Has there ever been an explanation as to why this doesn't work anymore? (I know it's the height of hubris/arrogance and I've now outed myself as someone who frequently made use of that feature, but we all do it. Did it.)

But Sam Bennett is fit. Bennett is a young kid who simply might be lacking behind others in terms of weight room training. Maybe nobody got him to do body weight exercises. More likely, he didn't have enough time to work out in the weight room and grow his muscles given the games and minutes he plays. That has nothing to do with Bennett not working hard or not being fit.
As for Howse, it's easy for you to say that you would work that much harder if you were in Howse's position but you never went through what Howse went through. And it's not easy maintaining a strict diet and exercise regimen. Many athletes can't do it. Many celebrities can't do it. For some it comes naturally. For others, it is tough work. Drew Doughty's nickname was Doughnuts because he had always been chubby and battled through weight problems all through juniors. A lot of people take a break after they graduate from University or even after high school. A lot of people don't love their jobs enough to put in the work necessary to become successful but they stay in their jobs because the money is good. It happens.

Or he wasn't aware and didn't prepare for the specific technique being mandated. Of all the things a draft eligible player should be spending time working on, executing a pull up is way down the list.

^^Pass. Let some other organization perhaps eventually use a contract spot for him. We have way too many guys who would be ahead of him. These guys WANT a spot and have done nothing to waste it.
All the best to him though. Hope he finds work and has a fire under him. Just a good shooter though. Never really have seen anything else in his game.
Lots of players here who have more game to them, most of which are as young or younger.

I agree. Valid points on both side really. To be truthful i only checked into sam bennett after i heard he couldn't do a chinup. From what I saw from the rest of the combine, the guy is legitimately quick. Legs aren't a problem

Umm... if Bennett wasn't aware and didn't prepare for the specific technique that was mandated that's all on him. There is zero excuse. I don't think any draft eligible player had the right to claim "surprise" at the tests and techniques mandated unless I am mistaken and the tests and techniques mandated were kept secret.
I don't think executing a pull up should be way down the list of things a draft eligible player should be spending time on at all. A pull up is one of the best exercises you can do to strengthen your grip and back muscles besides the deadlift. If you work out you should know. With that said, it is an advanced strength exercise that is difficult to do. Again, there's no need to excuse Bennett for his failure to perform a pull up. He needs to add strength and his inability to do a pull up at the combine has no bearing on his ability to develop into an effective NHL player.

In response to the bolded 'there is no excuse', you yourself absolutely nailed it a couple of posts higher:

THIS. We need to keep it in perspective. By all accounts Bennett works his arse off. He plays a hard-edged game, does what his coach and management asks of him and is immensely skilled. Howse was lacking in all those attributes but the former, which is why he failed as a pro.

Good to see the ol' Bennett can't do a pull up talk is back, because god knows a ton of good quality conversation came from that.

To be fair, it is just downright odd that he can't do one. If you go to any given high school class, I would guess at least a third of the kids will be able to do one. It is a fairly difficult bodyweight exercise, but it's something you just expect any moderately athletic person to be able to do - and we're talking about an elite top-level athlete who will go top 5 in an NHL draft. Just weird to me.
That being said, I think Bennett does have a commitment to fitness (and by all accounts seems very fit otherwise). He can only get better by improving his overall strength.

Pull ups are something where there a various ways to do it - and various "cheats". Maybe he just didn't understand what he would be specifically asked to do.
Regardless getting your under-roos in a twist about it seems really odd.
I really don't care if he can do a pull up or not. I care what he does on the ice.

Hell, the room for improvement physically almost pushes him up my draft list. He was the #1 ranked prospect despite being physically immature.
Its the exact opposite knock against Ekblad.

Couldn't agree more. Picking Ekblad or Richy to me is of much greater concern. These two are so physically mature that they're dominated the CHL, can they reproduce those results at the NHL level when they can't just rely on their size to push competitors around. I would way rather pick a guy with a given skill set, that is smaller, who is producing at a good level, who will still put on weight. I'm not talking small, still tall, just leaner because of age.

What I miss is the 'Nick Ritchie is a fatty' chat. Can we start that up again, because I think it might be more appropriate to the thread than Pull-Up-gate.
