I agree with you that there is irrational hate for Butler but his errors do result in big goals. I'm sure when the coaches watch him in practice, they see a big mobile defenseman with good skills, but in a game, he just panics and makes dumb decisions which leads to bad results.
I think the hate also stems from the fact that he is really plain vanilla. There's nothing interesting about him, he doesn't bring anything exciting. Mistakes will be there with a 3rd pairing guy, and I think most fans would accept that if he brought something else to the team.
For a guy like Cundari, he's suppose to be a greasy and tough player, and he showed some flashes of offense too last year. To put it another way, CUndari is a bit more exciting (can be good and bad) of a player than Butler, so I think fans want to see that more than boring old Butler.
Same goes for Breen, he brings another exciting element in his toughness and his ability to fight.
There's also the whole upside thing and the unknown with Cundari and Breen. Flames fans haven't had a chance to hate on these guys yet, but they have had plenty of time to hate on Butler, and he really hasn't done anything to change that.
It is interesting that Butler is asked every year to play for the US World Championship team, so that means that there are people in the hockey world who see potential from him.
