They had to get the big three on the screen together at some point, I didn't expect it to be in this movie though. I think it will be fine, might actually help distract people from the new Batman they already hate.
I am more interested to see who they plan to cast for the JL movie.. wonder if we get any hints in this one.
Image spoilered for size, honest.
Spoiler!
Why is Shazam the only one not looking forward to the guys with the business cards?
Idris Elba would be the perfect John Stewart, wow I can't believe I never saw that one before..
Also from what I have read on the interwebs, which never lie, is they plan to film the Man of Steel sequel and JL movie back to back. Releasing them a year apart, having the characters introduced in the sequel then a big cliff hanger that runs right into the JL movie.
I for one agree with this tactic.
Article discussing why this delay isn't a bad thing:

Jesse Eisenberg – best known as of late for his role as Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network – has been cast as Superman villain Lex Luthor, while Jeremy Irons will play Batman’s butler Alfred.
Said director Zack Snyder in a press release, “Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman’s rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940. What’s great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He’s a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions.”
The director added, “As everyone knows, Alfred is Bruce Wayne’s most trusted friend, ally and mentor, a noble guardian and father figure. He is an absolutely critical element in the intricate infrastructure that allows Bruce Wayne to transform himself into Batman. It is an honor to have such an amazingly seasoned and gifted actor as Jeremy taking on the important role of the man who mentors and guides the guarded and nearly impervious façade that encapsulates Bruce Wayne.”

I should trust these somewhat bizarre castings because Nolan is involved, but he's not directing and given Snyder's mediocre history, I can already see this project being a disaster.
I also knew those Juaquin Phoenix rumours were bull#### but still was dreaming of that one.

I think they did a great job casting both characters, pretty excited to see what Zuckerberg does with Luthor.

If they really wanted to go young they should have just cast Oscar Isaac, since Snyder already used him in his god awful Sucker Punch. He could have pulled Luthor off.
the similarities between what Eisenberg played as Mark Zuckerberg and what Lex Luthor is (petulant, jealous of Superman, extremely arrogant) are not that far off
it's out of left field, but I think it could really well, he was great in the Social Network
Irons is an amazing actor, big shoes to fill definitely but he's so talented
