They went with checking to the head rule...somehow. This doesn't make sense.
It makes perfect sense, actually.
A guy lying in a pool of his own blood is terrible optically - which everybody screaming about the Ottawa Sun's cover will tell you while reproducing said cover in high res - and if there is one thing suits can't stand, it is bad optics. Shanahan was caught in a position of having to do damage control, and since someone had to be punished, he needed a reason to suspend Gryba. And since you can kinda, sorta, barely see some contact to the head in one frame, that becomes as good a justification as any... so long as you ignore the rest of the replay.

Anyone else notice how habs fans are booing the refs for not calling a penalty everytime a habs player has been checked so far? Plus booing Alfredson, Karlsson, and Anderson for some reason (what did they do?)??

these fans have moved into wacky Canuck territory
They paid their money, they can boo and cheer whatever they want - and with refereeing like this, they should.
I dunno guys, apparently I'm in the stupid, blind minority, but I agree with Shanny. Based on the current rules and the angles I've seen, it seems like a "dirty" hit to me.
I doubt the head was intentionally targeted, but by the time their bodies hit, Eller's head was already spun 90 degrees over his shoulder. Making me think the head was hit first. He was spun around, not blown back, and he was KO'd before he hit the ice.
Plus, it's a MTL player. Plus, Gryba is a no-name plug. Plus, there was an injury on the play (and a pool of blood). I'm not surprised it was a suspension, but I think it should have only been one game, since there was no clear intent.
I think Brown's attempted elbow last night was wayyyyyyyy way worse, but this league punishes the results and not the act, so what are you gonna do.

They have been doing it for 100 years and refs eat it up.
