Then he should have negotiated a contract-long NTC or timed his baby production for the summer. Dick move.

No, you can retire at any moment for any reason as long as you're willing to forgo any money owed on your contract.

I'm not going to drag out the dictionary here, but I'm pretty sure that the definition of selfish is not "giving up more than a million dollars because you want to be near your home and family".

I sure as hell wouldn't sacrifice family considerations so my employer, who wants to ditch me, can plan for a future that doesn't involve me, contract or not.

Who here would?

I don't (and I don't think any of us do) know if this is true, but if it is, good for him. There's more to life than your job.

The cool thing about being rich, and being the best person in the world at your job for a few years, is that you don't have to do what you don't want to. You can do whatever you want. Hell, that's the point.

Don't have to work anymore? Don't work. Don't want to move? Don't move. Have enough money to live for the rest of your life and don't need any more? Mission: Accomplished.

This guy doesn't owe the Flames, much less us, a damn thing.

Deportation is clearly the only alternative.

On the Oilers' broadcast Mike Keenen was on the panel. He said when he was in Calgary he obviously had inside info about Kipper's contract and stated that Kipper never intended to play the last year of his contract. He said this was stated by Kipper in direct conversation. The panel also stated that he would not report if traded (and acknowledged Kypreos as the source).

If Kipper will not report (so likely no team trades for him) and retires at year end, this would make Calgary subject to the cap recapture clause in the new CBA for next year, would it not?

Geez, this trade deadline stuff has gone from fun daydreaming anticipation, to sad and vindictive hysteria. I'm kinda looking for it to be over now.

Yep, I remember Peter Zezel did it when he was traded due to family reasons (terribly ill niece I believe).

I can't remember, but I think the NHL voided the trade after Zezel retired.

This is likely more about having a say in where he is traded, not if he is traded. Once Kipper makes it known that he won't report if traded, the Flames, and any potential suitor are forced to deal with Kipper prior to the consummation of any deal. It strikes me as dirty pool since he contracted to release his ntc this year, but he can do what he wants.

He'll be moving within a couple of months anyway because if he's not dealt because of this tactic, I can't see fans getting behind him next year. I would say the odds are pretty high Kipper is wearing another jersey by April 3rd.

I'm confused.

Some of the posters angry about this "rumor" are the same ones who have said kipper is worth next to nothing.

Shouldn't they instead be happy we don't lose something to get nothing?

Yeah, but I wasn't talking about him retiring, I was talking about him threatening not report.

I wonder if it constitutes tampering in some way? Spitballing here.

What is wrong with everyone?

Trade frenzy seems to have taken over. The only value any player has is what they can attract in a trade. Kipprusoff has been the best Flames player for years, is a new father, and allegedly has said he will not report to any team but the Flames. Heaven forbid that the Flames continue to play such a historically important player to the team and that he simply wants to stay where he is and keep playing for the team he made a contract commitment to.

I understand that people want the team to be better and they think that trading everyone is the only answer. But it is not individual players' fault that the team is where they are. Kipper has more often than not been the Flames best player. If he doesn't want to go to a different city to finish out the year, I would think that true Flames fans would give him a pass on that. How petty have we become?

This is absolutely bang on.

As an employee you work hard while working but in lifestyle decisions you look after yourself. If you stay or go your manager still gets paid, your coworker comes to work and gets paid, you get replaced, no one is effected except you so why do some faceless corp a favor and move or do something you dont like for years out of your life? Way to go kipper!

If this is true then it's just another stupid Flames management contract.
How did they ever plan on trading a guy who had a NTC until his final year and never intended to play out that final year?

Talk about handcuffing yourself.

You know what's fun? Metal Slug Anthology. I'm playing it in between periods of this game on my PS3. It's not all doom and gloom in Calgary!
