Well then you haven't read much, and your friend is a poor comedian. It was designed to oxidize, and it looks a hell of a lot better than the majority of new arenas I've seen.

I really don't understand if you're going to build a brand new stadium, even if it is just for basket ball, why you wouldnt make the dimensions hockey viable. Especially when it was pretty likely that a hockey team would be moving in. Just seems like a massive oversight to me.

It was never likely that a hockey team would be moving in. Building it to be expandable for hockey was initially considered, but at that point in time the Islanders had shown no interest in a Brooklyn move, and there's not exactly a lot of demand for another 18,000 seat hockey arena when MSG is a couple of miles away. The final design was optimized for the arena's primary purpose, basketball, and for concerts.

Wasn't there quiet a cost difference as well?

I know perfectly well that it was intended to oxidize. It's still an idiotic material to build the exterior of an arena out of.
The official idea, according to the Barclays Center bumf, is that the colour of the exterior is supposed to suggest the brownstones of Brooklyn. I have never seen brownstones that colour used in building, either in person or in photographs. What it does suggest to me is a gigantic turd.

I'd never heard that reason before, but interestingly enough if you google image search "Brooklyn brownstone' you get a lot of pictures of buildings that are a pretty similar shade. Personal taste is personal taste though, we're not all going to like the same things.

Those are terrible, especially because some of them are close to the ice and should be premium pricing in the USA.
Hooefully it works out or them, but let us also hope they can do some odifications over the next year or two

You only really need to see 2/3 of the ice to know what's going on at an Islanders game anyway, so not a big deal.

Are those just bad photos, or can you really not see both ends of the ice from that one end?
I can't believe the NHL would actually allow a move to such a facility.

How do you even price hose seats? That's ridiculous for a professional sports experience. The layout looked terrible when it was presented and the real-life version is worse then I expected.

from what I understand is for the arena to become more hockey ready by 2015 via renovations. none of those have begun, so it's way to early to call it a failure or embarrassment.

even the stadiums in baseball have some views like that, when I was in skydome my seats didn't have a view of left field

But you could at least see the pitcher's mound and home plate.

going by the stadium layout in post 248, it looks like at least one of those pictures was taken from a location where they are not selling tickets
regardless, they are sold as obstructed view seats for cheap; the buyers know what they are getting
